Hi everyone, iv been slowly rebuilding my cd11 and have come across a few things that im unsure of, first off, iv rebuilt the carb with a omc carb kit with new plastic float and all went well with the carb rebuild, so now iv recently started on the ignition system which was all original, badly cracked coils and such.
My first question is regarding the small fiber sponge for oiling the cam, on a previouse motor i rebuilt it had 2 of these and the cdll only has one, and doesnt seem to have a place for the other one, dont know if this is the way it should be or not.
My second question relates to the carb and advance base, my advance base has excessive wear on it and think its due to the carb throttle lever rubbing on it when u throttle up and down, im fairly sure there should be a plastic or rubber gromet to prevent wear between the advance plate and the throttle arm on the carb, but im not 100% on this, im thinking of using jb weld to repair worn area on the advance plate.
So ill leave it at that for now,any input always appreciated
Thanks, stickler.

One cam oiler is all you need and on motors I've seen there is only a place for one. There was a post a little while ago about a fellow who had a worn cam and he welded some more aluminum to the edge and then re-dressed it. I had one that would not reach to the follower on time and I took a dremel and elongated the adjusting hole on the cam and that worked well. JB weld would probably work too. Nice to have so many heads working on a problem. Best of luck. Rick.

Hey Rick, there only seems to be a place for one oiler , i was wondering due to the fact that my 1971 4w71d 4hp had two oilers for the cam, but maybe the early models only have one? im still curiouse as to wether or not the throttle arm is supposed to have a roller on it to prevent friction damage to the advance. Little cold out today eh. thanks for the quick response.

Hi There Stickler. Didn't realize it was you. My 54 LOL JW-10 only had one and metal to metal on the cam and follower. That's funny my main kicker is a 71 -4HP. Evinrude. I don't know if it has one or two but I'm sure one is all you would need. Did you see my pictures of the JW-10 finished? Send me you email and I'll send you a few. I'd like to see some of yours as well. You're in good hands with High Trim helping you. He knows these old motors. Thought I was projectless and then today I saw a pool of gear oil under the gear case on a 6 horse I have been waiting to give to a guy. Funny it never leaked a drop all winter. Oh well. I really want to start tying flies and stop working on motors til fall. Rick.

Re: 1954 johnson cd 11 questions?

my cd 13 has no roller on the throttle arm , but my cd 14 does.

edit: just had a look at an nfg cd 13 powerhead, and sometime during its life someone added a piece of thin wall rubber tubing to the throttle arm....possibly to compensate for the wear you describe?

If there is a significant groove worn in the cam follower rod, Just adjust the cam by loosening the two bolts to properly synch the carb to the mag plate.
