So I found out from fellow AOMCI members that it is an aftermarket accessory. Not home made at all. Ive never seen one before, that is for sure.

If you could Rock I would be interested in some good pictures of this. There is an AOMCI member that I know that is writing an article on RD accessories for the Antique Outboarder magazine and would like to use your pics in his article. PM if interested.

That definitely looks like a scary arrangement. With the engine running at 4300 RPM the starter drive would be turning in the ball park of 25,000 RPM. Running a chain that fast dry is a frightening thought. Also chains are noisy.

It likely has a clutch set-up on it.----Something like you would find on the recoil of a newer 9.9 Mercury.-Or on an old Waterwitch outboard recoil.---Or like the recoils on the old time Briggs and Stratton small engines.
