1954ish evinrude 7.5????

a friend of mine has a roughly 1954 evinrude 7.5 that keeps popping out of gear... what do you guys think could cause this???

There's a small tab in the gearcase that provides the detent positions for the shifter. I have seen a few of those tabs break over the years, thus losing that positive engagement. Can also be caused by a worn shifter dog. Both need the skeg portion of the gearcase removed to inspect the innards...

oh boy. is that hard to deal with? what should i be looking for? just peices of metal and debris? anything special in particular?

The skeg part is held on by six screws, plus one to release the shift fork. Pop it off and take a look. Hopefully, the tab is either just loose and slid off to the side, or if it broke, it is sitting in the bottom. They can do a number on the gears if they get sucked in there...
