HI
You need to get the correct gas line for your tank, the single gasline will not fit your motor.
The gas tank for your motor has a primer installed in it.
A gas tank from Wal-Mart will not work.
I have seen the gas tank you need on E-Bay once in awhile

jo_nathan,

Yes. you need a special 2-hose pressurized tank to work with that engine. They are getting rare, but they can be found.

You also may be able to convert your engine to a single line (with fuel pump).

Do a search on this baord using the search words-pressurized tank conversion.

Re: 1955 7.5 evinrude gas tank???????

I have the original tank and apparently it may just need new lines and gaskets. I thought I would buy new stuff for it because everything looked old. I cranked the motor and it runs but leaks alot of gas on motor so Im going to replace all the lines. What is the apparatus thing called where the tiller handles meets the first set of gears because they are slipping and can I adjust these? and what color smoke should I be seeing from this old timer? Alot of questions I know but You guys are my only hope. Without any info on this thing I see paddeling in my near future!!!

thanks again for the help
jonathan

jo_nathan,

The smoke should be bluish in color. Use only TCW-3 rated oil.

The gears you describe are universal joints. I do not think there is an adjustment.

Check these guys out. They will have used parts for your engine.

www.twincityoutboard.com

Hi Jo-nathan
Congratulations on aquiring your new older motor. Many of these motors are still in regular service. Most parts are still available also. There are quite a few little things you should know and understand about these models to help you opperate them reliably. The first thing you need to realize is that this unit is near 50yrs old. This fact doesn't mean this is a bad machine. It does how ever mean you will want to check, test and service all the systems that make it work. Your tank (as you state)will need some work. You will want to give the rank a complete over-haul,as it is one of the most important parts of the fuel system of these models. There are tons of these motors around in good mechanical condition, that won't run, because the fuel tanks, hoses and connectors were deprived of attention. If you would like a copy of a period owners manual post your e-mail address and I will try and shoot you a copy. I think once you read it you will have a better idea as to what needs to be done. It will also help you to ask questions, so we may help you better.

Alcan,

Can I get a copy of whatever you have on these motors. I've got a '54 7.5 that runs very well. Got it in a trade for a dog kennel.

Tx.

Joe

jferreira@kronos.com

MY EMAIL IS jonathwill@juno.com Thanks alot for the info. I'm looking fo rthe hoses today I'm gonna just get some rubber hose from the local auto zone and put on it. and then check for leaks. I am concerned if I am getting to much smoke and not being able to correct it. I guess I will have to just experiment with this jewel.

thanks jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
As a fellow '55 Fleetwin owner, a few things to keep in mind. At the recommended 24:1 oil ratio, you're going to get smoke, and generally lots of it, particularly at start-up. You'll also get what seems like a lot more when you start it in a barrel, as it concentrates the smoke in one place moreso than on the back of a boat.
You may want to replace the waterpump impeller, too. As a matter of fact, I recommend it. New ones are cheap, and they're not too hard to replace. You do have to remove the powerhead from the mid-section to do it (shift rod disconnect is under the powerhead) but it's not as daunting as it may sound. Salvage the gasket as best you can so you can cut a new one.
Try www.vintageoutboards.com for a rebuild kit for your gas tank. It has the base gasket, plus the various o-rings and diaphrams inside. Relatively inexpensive, too, and will save you some gasket cutting and frustration.
Those little 7.5s are great runners. They do like lightweight hulls and do not like to be loaded down. If you've got a 14-footer with 3-guys, a cooler, fishing gear, etc. it's not going to be happy. It has aluminum rods with bronze sleeve bearings, and as such won't take a ton of abuse. Keep the oil on the rich side (no less than a quart of TCW3 rated oil per 6-gallons of mid-grade gas).
Also, keep an eye on the gearcase lube. If it starts to get milky in short order, then new seals (propshaft, driveshaft and shift-rod) are in order. Not a difficult job, and the parts are readily available.
Just for grins, has this motor been run recently (last 10 years)?? You might want to check the coils for cracking. Remove the recoil, followed by the three screws that hold the access plate to the top of the flywheel (if the plate is still there). Take a look inside and note whether the coils are shiny plastic (green, red or brown), or dull, cracked and chalky looking. The dull, cracked coils are likely the originals and will need to be replaced. Also, note as to whether the condensers have an orange fiber cap or a rubber cap. The orange fiber ones are original and should be replaced, even if they work for now. Condensers have a habit of going bad when you can least afford it - miles downstream with a 38-footer bearing down on you.
Don't forget the hoses under the hood. They're 1/8" ID
- Scott

Hi Jonathon
What Chinewalker says is good advice. Along with the info I sent you, you will also want to get a copy of a repair manual. The owners manual explains what needs to be done, the repair manuals tell you how. The double hose fuel line is still available. You can order ir through Napa auto parts Sierra marine parts catolog. Most OMC dealers can get it for you also (if they will). As for your tiller arm control, you may need to disassemble it and clean and oil the parts, there may be a bent washer or something. What ever the case be gentle, as these parts can break.
