Well, got this old Brooklure 500 (5hp) Up and running and she runs great for a 55 year old motor. This motor has a built in fuel tank, but it also has a fuel pump so you can use it with an external tank. The fuel pump was disconnected when I bought the motor. So anyway, some questions:

1. The diaphragm in the pump is shot. Where can I get a new one.
2. How does the fuel pump line connect to the carb? Just a tee in the fuel line from the built in tank?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that is based on the Gale 5D11.If it has the odd bottom feed carb with a primer lever instead of a choke it won't work with a fuel pump. The pressure holds the float closed. If it has the more conventional carb with typical choke butterfly it will work with a pump and may not be a 55 or may have a newer power head.
I don't think you can find pump parts for that but you can try A BRP dealer may be able to match the diaphram or you may be able to make a diaphram from a larger one.
I've done that on a number of motors.I believe the Gale started using pumps in 58.
E/J in 61.

Actually, Gale had fuel pumps as standard equipment on the 1955 22hp, and was offered as an accessory kit for the 1955 12hp 12D11. As stated, it cannot be used on the 1955 5hp because of the carburetor, besides there is no mounting place for a pump. So, if you have a pump, you don't have a 1955.

However, the accessory fuel pump kit was offered for the 1956 5hp 5D12-up. As with the 12, you could use the pump OR the built-in tank. They were not interconnected. After installing the pump kit, the built-in tank just went along for the ride.

For a replacement pump buy an 18-7350 here at i-boats. The old Gale pump and/or parts is long ago obsolete.

Hmm - the carb on this motor is a conventional carb - looks almost the same as the carb off a '55 Johnson 5.5hp, except it doesn't have the glass filter bowl on the bottom. It doesn't have the prime feature. The fuel pump does look like an add-on with a make-shift bracket. However, it is painted the same color as the rest of the motor. It sits on the starboard side of the engine and connects to a vacuum hook-up on the block. The pump/glass bowl with filter are all one unit. Maybe I'll see if I can get a large diaphragm and cut it to fit. To connect it, I guess I would have to disconnect the line from the built in tank, or add a tee and a couple of shut-off valves. Seems like this motor should have some sort of priming feature if you're going to use the built-in tank, as the fuel line enters toward the bottom of the carb. It takes a lot of pulls to get her started with a dry carb.

OK, for one thing you don't have a '55 if you have a conventional carburetor. Somebody has cobbled a non-Gale pump onto your motor. OR maybe if it truly is a 1955 they have cobbled a convetional carburetor on it too???? But that would be a very difficult task---I know because I tried it, and never got it to work. The pump you describe seems to be for a Scott-Atwater. Or possibly a large OMC pump from a 35-up horsepower. If it is the large OMC pump, repair kits are available right here at i-boats.

The proper fuel pump for a 1956-up mounts directly to the lower starboard side of the cylinder block. There are 3 holes cast into the block for that purpose.

As I said, the pump kit was intended to be used INSTEAD of the built-in tank. If you want to use both, well thats more cobbleing.

With the proper fuel pump accessory installed you primed/filled the carburetor by squeezing the bulb in the tank hose. As you already figured out, somehow running the built-in tank hose through the pump will only cause problems, beginning with no way to prime it.

Re: 1955 Brooklure Fuel Pump

Here's a photo of the fuel pump set-up. The fuel pump is not connected, and was not connected when I bought the motor. The fuel line runs directly from the onboard tank to the carb. Looks like a conventional carb to me. It does have both high and low speed needle adjustments and no primer. There is no fuel line connector on the motor where you would normally connect the external tank. And it doesn't appear there ever was one as the paint is not scratched in that area. The fuel pump has obviously been used in the past. So maybe someone added it on at some point. It's possible that this is an earlier model than a 1955. I said 1955 because the leg/lower unit is identical to my 1955 Johnson 5.5hp.

OK, without the model number I can't pinpoint the year. But I can tell you that it is no older than 1956. And yes, the carburetor is closely related to your Johnson carb.

As I guessed, that is a Scott-Atwater fuel pump.

If in the picture you look behind the bottom of the glass bowl, you will see the three holes where a correct fuel pump mounts. I think they are using a couple of them for the makeshift brackets.

It should gravity feed just fine with the onboard tank hookup as in the picture. If it doesn't, there is some other problem, like a clogged filter or...

Thanks F_R! So can I get a diaphragm for that fuel pump anywhere? By the way, the model number of the motor is 50T33438.

Are you sure that "8" isn't a "B"? 50T3343B is a 1957, Gale model 5D14.

Laings has the diaphragms. http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpage4.htm#SCOTT-McCULLOCH Includes Elgin from 1960 up, Firestone up to 1958 Wizard from 1959 to 1964, Sears from 1964-69, Corsair, some Haiwatha

That pump fits a 1956 Scott-Atwater 16hp model 3965, as well as others. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/frankr_photos/FuelPump-1.jpg

Yup - the "8" is actually a "B" - so it's a 1957. Thanks F_R:)
