I have a 1955 Evinrude that I am trying to restore that slips out of forward when running. It does not have this problem in reverse. When you put pressure on the shift lever in forward it does not slip out. The gears do not seem to be grinding. Are there any adjustments for the shift link or the shift lever to solve this problem or do I need to tear down the lower unit to see if the gears are damaged. Any help trouble shooting this would be greatly appreciated.

i also hav e a 55 15hp rude, what your problem is , is a bad clutch dog. this is the shifting gear, the have square teeth, over the years the become worn on the edges and don't engage properly. thus they slip out of gear. the main problem is trying to find a replacement,, abd whether on not the forward gear is damaged also., nay as well bust open the lower and see what's there, you may be able to find a donor lower, or try at twincityoutboards. mine also periodically thunks, so i baby it under load, ease the throttle up .

Tashasdaddy, does the '55 have the same lower unit as the 18hp? The dog might still be available if that's the case. I know the '56 15hp dog is still available (375711).

Many of those earlier dogs can be flipped over. Sometimes it's just enough.

Thank you both for the quick reply. If I pop the lower end unit do I have to use new seals? Are there any special tools needed? If not I will give it a try when I get back from travel next week and fill you how it went.

Pretty straight forward procedure Just note the small screw that Secures the shift yoke.
Sometimes you can reverse the dog so the worn side ingages the reverse gear where the strain is less.
You should really work with a manual.Sometimes you can find one at the library.
