I have a 1955 Evinrude 7.5 HP that I am having trouble with pulling the rope to start. I am looking for a diagram on the bottom side of the starter rope assembly. There is three springs and I was wanting to make sure I have them on correct. I would like to buy new springs if anyone knows were to get them at. I put a new tension spring on there last year and went boating and the motor died and the starter rope assembly would not engage with the fly wheel. Its getting close to fishing season and I want to get this fixed.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Did you remove it and it still does not pull and recoil properly? I have the parts manual for the '54 or the '56 E7.5 that I could email you if you PM me. The '54 is closer though and has the 3 spring pawl method.

I have a recoil coming for my cd-12, if it comes in today or tomorrow i'll post pics. As far as springs I had to match them up on my 7.5, it was missing a spring.

That sounds great. I would appreciate any help. I would think that a person could still find diagrams in the internet.
Thanks

The springs are part number 202155, available from any Evinrude dealer. It would be hard to put them on wrong. They pull the pawls toward the center when you pull the rope.

Is the screw in the center spindle tight? Or did you leave it loose because it locks eveerything up when tightened? If that is the case, you assembled it wrong. A very common error.

Thank you very much for the part number on the springs. Wow, thats good news that I will be able to install the springs correct.
Yes, I had the screw in the center really tight. I believe the problem lies within the springs, the tension was not good at all. I will get new springs and give it a try.

Thanks Again.

I went to www.evinrude.com and checked out the cost of one of those springs and they had some for 18.06 ea. I found another site www.yancypowersports.com and found them for $3.00 ea. They also have several hard to find parts if you need any. It would be worth your while to check them out.

Thanks

There is no tension on the springs until you pull the rope, they work backward to what you are thinking.

Hi again, I went an looked at my starter and when I purchased it the screw was on the top and centered. Yours show the screw on the underside and in the center. Which is correct?
Thank you!

Well that would explain the issues I have been having. I had the screw on top just as it was when I bought it. So what goes in the top?
Thanks

Re: 1955 Evinrude 7.5 HP Fleetwin Aquasonic

Hi, I got the new springs installed and tried to start and engaged the flywheel. Now the rope would not go back in. Took starter completly apart, put coil back in and all hardware. Pulled rope again and engaged the starter, again rope would not retract back all the way. I know the length is fine because it worked last year. I saw and read answer in this thread about the spring in the center.Take a look at the spring in the center and see if you think it is still good or stretched. I am trying to attached pic but this vista system keeps stalling, I hate it. Let me know if you have any ideas and if there might be a link that I can compare to any pic's. I also posted a pic of my starter.

Thanks
