The small spring in the center is responsible for engaging the pawl to grab onto the flywheel, the larger spring rewinds the rope.

You need the recoil reset up, that small spring doesnt rewind the rope, the link in this thread should give you some answers

Thanks BKTHEKING, After I went in and unhooked the rope and re-round the coil everything fell into place. I will try it tomorrow morning and see if everything works. Did you see the center spring in my pic? Did it look ok to you. What a pain in the butt, but it sure feels good acomplishing my first minor repair. Now I need to get a service/repair manual and raise havic. ha ha

Thanks so much!

They actually are easy work on if you know "how" they work. F_R has the knowledge on these older motors (and Zeph ;)). Your spring looks perfect, it should be ok now if it recoils in your hand.

You know, I took a starter set up like this and adapted it to my 1946 Zephyr that you see in my avitar. It came off of a 1954 Johnson 5.5hp that had a blown engine. I put the spool with the three cogs in the recoil cap and I put the starter pawl ring on the flywheel with 12 guage washers shimming it up. It worked great.:D:D:D
