1955 Johnson Seahorse 10. What's in the tank?

The motor starts and runs till the tank needs pumping up again, but the motor is pumping air pressure into the air hose.<br />What is in the tank unit that would cause this problem, and is it safe to blow out the tank mechanism with compressed air, or is there something in there that could be damaged?

I think you are describing normal operation, Woodeye.<br /><br />One hose carries fuel to the carb. The other hose carries air from the engine to keep the tank pressurized.<br /><br />The only time you should need to pump the primer on the tank is to fill the carb on start-up.<br /><br />If I misunderstood your post, please try me again, here.<br /><br />Good luck.

Hi Woodeye<br />Your tank is a presure vessel. You have a leak in the system somewhere. Do not blow compressed air down the hoses. There is a diaphram in there with a few other things to make up a primer pump. You will have to determine what is leaking. The fuel line connector o-rings are the first things to look at. Start the motor and pour soapy water over the tank. You will see the bubbles and know what to do. It is far cheeper to rebuild the tank and connector rather than scrap it for a newer pump system. All the parts can be had. If you do a good job the tank will probably last another 50 years. Be sure to get a few extra sets of the o-rings for the connector, they tend to wear a little more often.

i have a 5.5 tank that is full of rust and i am wondering if i can put a new tank on it with the air line which it has now?i don`t think i can find a tank like it has now with the primer, air line & fuel line on the tank.will it run without the air line? sorry it is similar to your problem.
