The coil might have finally given up on you, I think you can still get parts for that vintage of motor though.

Pull the flywheel and check the coil, plug wire, points and condensor. May just be dirty points.

Those scotts are also famous for bad plug wires. The way the timing advance works it can rub a hole in the wire and short it out. The wires also tend to come loose under the flywheel.

Re: 1955 scott atwater 5hp top cyl. no spark

Just picked up one and just finished getting it to fire up. I had spark to one cylinder. I replaced the other coil by using an Evinrude coil body on the existing metal field. Still no spark. I rarely have a problem with condensers so it was the last thing I played with. That was it. I'd recommend you try the coil conversion but first try the condenser. I'm not great with electronics so it's hit or miss. Hope this helps.

I just picked up the identical motor. I had the same problem. I thought it was the coil so I did the conversion using an Evinrude coil body with the existing Scott metal field. Still no spark. I replaced the condenser and that was it. It's now firing on both. I'd check out the condenser first and if not do the OMC coil conversion. Hope this helps.
