Hello,

I have recently acquired a:

1955 Sea King 12 HP outboard
Montgomery Ward
Model #GG9016A
Serial #55X577504
Gale 12d11

I have been referencing this manual:

https://www.richardlpaquette.ca/GaleProducts1951-1963ServiceManual.pdf

I have not tried starting it yet. It has compression, does not have spark.

I used a spark checker and did not get spark on either cylinder. Spark plugs look okay like someone replaced them and still couldn’t get spark and gave up. I tested the spark wires with a multimeter and only got “OL” reading, so I’m thinking it’s the wires.

Both coils read about 7,300 ohms. I found an old magneto unit with spark wires on eBay for this exact motor and the description said it had spark on both cylinders and it was $20 so I figured why not and it’s coming in the mail.

I also read that it’s good to go ahead and replace the impeller so I found a modern replacement Sierra 18-3002 for $12 so that’s coming in the mail as well.

I also have a timing tool in the mail, a little confused on how to use it but I know you have to line up the lines on the flywheel.

I drained and filled the lower unit gear oil near the propeller.

I tried finding a carburetor rebuild kit, but I am having trouble identifying the part number, I kept getting recommended Sierra 18-7043 but it doesn’t look right. I will just clean the carb in the meantime.

Is there anything else I need to check before attempting to start this motor? I know the fuel ratio is 24:1 regular unleaded gas:TC-W3 2 stroke oil

I have a barrel test tank ready.

Thank you

The timing tool is a shop time saver.----You can use the flywheel to get the same results.-----Picture of the coils and condensers?

I have another magneto coming that looks in better condition than this one, but I plan on fixing what I can with this and keeping as a backup.

Is there anything I can do to clean this up?

The one in the picture looks very good.----Clean and set points at 0.020 and check for spark.----Then set using the flywheel to get maximum spart at the right time.----The timing tool ( I have them ) is nothing but a " dummy flywheel " a shop time saver.
