Great motor. One of my favourites. That's my favourite shade of Holiday Bronze.

I know you already have a 1957 35 hp so I will assume you know to check the coils and replace the impeller.

If you need a pressure tank for that motor if it hasn't been converted over there is a pressure tank on Ebay, I just seen it earlier today. Those tanks can be hard to find.

If you have the money I would check that out, I'll try to find the link for you. Unless you would like to convert it over so you can use a more modern tank.

I will replace the impeller. What is the deal with the impllers? do they wear out or just become brittle?

The coils on both 35 hp and 10hp are hot! big spark. Is there an instrument to check them with? A high voltage probe on a meter? What am I measuring for, 50k volts DC?

I never have checked voltage on mine. the normal procedure is to get a spark tester and see if the spark will jump a 7/16 inch gap. Usually you can get a friend to hold the plug with a pair of rubber-handled pliers about 1/4 inch from the block and turn it over. If it jumps the gap with a nice blue spark your spark worries are usually over.
As to the impeller-- over time just sitting in the water pump housing the rubber gets "set" which means the fins take the shape of the curve they had while they were squeezed in the pump housing and harden in that position, making them useless. After even longer, they do get brittle and the blades will break off. If you crank the motor with brittle impeller blades the broken pieces may go up the water tube and get stuck in the water jackets, blocking water flow through the powerhead. A lot of experienced folks who's posts I read a lot suggest changing them every 2 years--good or bad.
good luck,
I can't wait to see your 35.

Thanks for the info. Spark is definitly an issue according to you test spec.
I will get the new impellers coming for the 10 and the 35.

I am getting pretty pumped because I think I got ahold of a couple of mechanically sound units. I am excited to get them in the water. But I want to make sure they are good to go first. When I get the manual I am going to follow procedures to the letter and listen to what you guys with experience have to say. The value of experience is worth more than all the books in the world. I am a very experienced mechanic as I grew up working for my dad in his auto resto shop unfortunatly these are my first boat engine projects.
Again Thanks for the advice.

Nice engine. But the shifter looks a little toast. Are you planning to fix it or do you have another?

I've got a guy looking for one. Doug Penn? Do you know him. He found me a tiller set up for my 35. I will definitely replace the busted shifter.

i just recently picked up a QD-17 10 horse and i was wondering what is the gas/ oil mixture. They say that you can use 32:1 or even 40:1, but I don't want to hurt it.
