The 56 is not factory engineered for an electric starter. Guess you could try to jerry-rig one using enough parts from a donor 57 but that would be pretty dicey. If it's got fresh ignition parts, ie. good coils, points, condensors, plugs and wires, it should pull start on the 2nd to 4th pull. Once warmed up, they will go with one pull. A whale tale may help with planing if the transom allows the lower unit to ride too far below the stern. The cavitation plate on the LU should be even with, or within an inch (higher or lower), of the bottom of the boat if the motor is rigged correctly. Too deep and it will plow, too high and it will cavitate and act squirrely. You can use spacers to get the right height or a jack plate, if you're into fabricating your own stuff. With the 15 hp you may have to rig an extra pilot's seat, so you can sit a little forward of the rear seat...this will help get the weight distribution right and help with planing, performance too.

I think I like the idea of the extra seat, this motor is pretty tall it came off pontoon so it might sit low in water, one more thing Im gonna run fuel pump on this motor and do away with presure tank will standard two prong fuel connector work for me?

Re: 1956 15hp evinrude help

There certainly was an electric start 1956 15hp motor from the factory. It is a model FDE-10 in Johnson trim. Not sure about the Evinrude version. I have the parts book for the FDE-10, so I know it exists. There even was a 12hp Electric start Gale Buccaneer, closely related to the 15 Johnson and Evinrude. It was model 12DE13B for 1956. I have that parts book also.

The Gale even had a fuel pump as standard equipment.

Evinrude had electric start available in the 1956 line up, too.

I stand corrected. But anyone know where to get the starter and flywheel and bracket for the starter for his stock Evinrude? Never seen such an animal myself, but wonder if a non-electric start model could be retro-fitted?

Re: 1956 15hp evinrude help

If I am not mistaken, the '56 is 6-volt and the '57 is 12-volt. Whether the flywheels and brackets are interchangeable, I'm not 100% sure.....probably are though.

Judging by the number of people inquiring about where to find the parts, I'd guess that there are more people looking for them than were ever produced. Good luck.

Re: 1956 15hp evinrude help

FR is right about the voltages. I know you can bolt the 1957 and later Big Twin electric stuff on (at least) the 1954-56 Big Twins to convert them to the 12V. So I assume you can with the 15/18 hp as well. You probably don't need to change the flywheel just the starter ring on it. The non-electric 1956 has a toothless ring bolted on the outside of the flywheel. I would expect that the 18 hp electric start parts would fit the 15 hp for some years following 1957, but I don't have any manuals with me to say which years.
