1956 30hp big twin

i took out the drain screw for the lower unit to change the gear oil. now the holes dont line up to get it back in. help please!!

You took out the shifter fork clevis screw, not the drain plug. Bad idea. The plugs are straight slots, the clevis screw is usually a phillips.

You might get lucky, but you will probably have to dismantle the foot to get it back together correctly.

im new w/ boat motors but pretty handy,i have a 54 7.5 evinrude i messed around w/ and all went fine. now i guess i goofed thank you for the info.i'll get help

Try an awl and a little jiggle of the shift handle. You can usually line it back up that way... Make sure there's a fiber washer on the shift fork screw....

as jb said.it,s not really that hard to fix really.easiest way is to open the shift linkage window and undo the bottom bolt then take all the lower unit screws holding the gearset together off ,loosen the pieces and reach in with you fingers and re set the position of the shifter fork ,put the screw in first to hold then reassemble.ive done it a couple of times in the last week due to replaceing parts,and it works.good luck.your other option is to send that motor to me as a spare,lol.

That's sounds like a lotta work. As Scott said, I also use an awl, unhook the shifter cable and wiggle the shifter by hand until the awl lines it you for you. I had a friend do the same thing recently on his '57 Javelin 35hp and he knows nothing about outboards and he fixed it with the awl.

If all else fails, turn the engine upside down as gavity will be working with you.

yes it does sound like a lot of work doesnt it.after reflection your way is a lot easier ,i was in the process of putting in a new clutch dog in mine and was going by that.
