I am doing a tune up on my 1956 15 HP Evinrude 15016. I noticed that the wick that is supposed to rub on the cam and lubricate the points is missing. The retainer is there but it looks like the wick has disintegrated over the last 50+ years to where it is not really there. Does anyone know if they are available, or if I really need it there? If so, what lube goes in the wick? Oil? Grease? What is the wick made of? What little is left looks like felt. Thanks, Rick

It is felt, to the best of my knowledge.

I always used a little ( I mean a little) white lithium grease.

A new wick comes with every set of points.

I bought a Sierra tune up kit, and there is a capsule of grease, but no wick. if I knew the size I would buy some felt and make one. Rick

hello,

go over to ur friendly auto parts store and ask to see a set of points for a 1969 chevy nova 350. then take a look-see to get an idea of size. no doubt it wount be taller [wider] that the cam block on distr. and it is prob about 1/16th to 3/32nds thick. and if u have the orig but deteriorated well, about 3/32nd +/- would flap on the cam lobe to wipe it as it revolves. and the length to orig position sets overall length. i always used the grease that came in the lil pill capsule and added a small drop of oil such as 3/1 but any will do. i never had a points cam lobe fail. but i have seen some worn ones on cars with points that had gone too far tween tune ups.

hope this helps.

For $20 I'd just get a new set of points. They come with a new felt oil wick. I just use a few drops of light machine oil (3 in 1) every year when I check and clean the points.

The points are brand new, out of the package yesterday. I just need the wick. Rick

I'd go to your local marine dealer and see if they have one to spare. I don't think you can buy it separately - normally.

Jezuit.... The part number of that wick is 581011. Cost about $2.00. If you can't get one at your local dealership, send me a private message with your mailing address as I have a couple left in stock.

Thanks Joe. My parts list shows it as P/N 510189 and BRP lists the one for a 1968 18 Hp as 0510189. I am assuming it is the same. I'll let you know if I can't find one locally. Rick

BRP lists the points for the 15 hp at $25.89 (0172522) and Sierra at $17.72 (18-5006). If you are paying more than that for those points I'd find a new shop. ;)

After a little checking it does appear that the Sierra points don't come with the wick -
cheap buggers. Another reason I use OEM parts.
