Re: 1956 Evinrude 15 HP

Started putting it back together today or tried to..... One of the small bolts on the lower unit snapped while I was installing the lower unit back on. I seriously lucked out and was able to back out the broken off half with some pliers. It was just its time to break I think. It wasn't even tight. New one on the way.,

Also I figured I would practice a bit and kept going. I could not get the bottom screw of the shift coupler in. Is there some trick I don't know or am I just doing something wrong? It seems like its all coming together right except for that.

The notch in the shift rod MUST line up before the bolt will go in.

So the points look brand new and so do the coils. I have new points and condensers but the ones installed look fine. I do they they were gapped too close though. Should that make it hard to start if they are too close? I was having to pull the rope quite a few times to get it to go and that's why I figured the points or coils were old/bad.

There is no way to tell if points or condensors are good by looking at them, sorry. Points you can get a good idea if you know what you are looking at, but not a chance for condensors.

Replace it is then. I'm going to use this motor with my kid in the boat so I don't want to mess around. My baby momma would slap me real hard if we got stuck out on the water because I didn't install $20 worth of parts I already had. I have a fly wheel puller and will get a torque wrench.
