I recently picked up a 1956 7.5hp Evinrude. I've tested it in a tank but I haven't had it on the water yet. I changed the oil after I ran it in the tank (didn't know when it had been done last) and it was completely white. Not a good sign. I left the motor sitting for about 6 weeks, and I've had oil dripping slowly ever since. It wasn't the plugs, so I pulled the prop and took a look at the o-ring on the prop shaft. It was in decent shape, but whoever took the gear case off last did a pretty bad job because there was gasket maker stuck in the o-ring. So, long story short, can anyone tell me the specific part number for that o-ring? I found this page but I don't know the original part number.

Thanks for your help!

Pat

Holy Moses. You had 45 views and no help yet? Well, I will help then.

You need a re-seal kit, for that lower unit. I would do the whole thing, so a little while later, something else doesn't fail. A complete rebuild usually takes only an afternoon to do and it's quite simple. You may likely find a step by step proceedure on the job, in the "Top Secret File"

+1. You can get a reseal kit right here at iboats for about $25. The only "special" tools you need are a seal puller ($7 at autostore) and a punch to remove the shift shaft bearing. You can make one, or use the method in the link below. You'll also want to get some 3M 847 gasket sealant. However, most stores don't carry it so you may have to order it.

I hate seeing gasket maker in a gearcase, never works right.

part number is 303360, but as Zeph stated, reseal the whole gearcase while it is apart.

Thanks for all the tips. I was able to locate a dealer in town who had the o-rings in stock. I was also able to get the spaghetti seal (part #303328).

My next question: Is the spaghetti seal good enough? The guy at the marine store said it was, but I want to make sure. Should I use both the seal and gasket maker? Or just the gasket maker? I got this stuff

No, use the 847 sealer only. You'll still want to replace the o-ring for the shift rod and the seal that's under the water pump wear plate. One thing you'll want to do, when you replace the upper seal, is secure the waterpump housing screws down good, in order to keep the upper bearing hub (#40) from coming out, otherwise, you'll need to replace the gasket and re-seal it. Use your seal puller to remove the seal then put the new one in. You can also get a shift rod o-ring removal tool from F_R (Frank Robb) here. Just do a search on his user name and send him a pm. His shift rod tools are inexpensive and well worth the cost.

That's not what I wanted to hear :O

Does that mean I need to take the entire lower unit off? I was hoping that I could get away with only removing the gear case.

Pat,
Take the powerhead off so you can remove the lower unit and do the total reseal. Anything less is a waste of time and money. Removing the powerhead is not hard or time consuming. You don't even have to remove the carb. just take the fuel lines off the carb, disconnect the throttle tower rod where it swivels at the powerhead (2 screws), and disconnect the shift lever (one bolt). Then remove all the screws holding the powerhead on. Use a flathead screwdriver that fits RIGHT. You can make your own base gasket out of felpro 1/16" thick black material from the auto parts store, or buy your own when you order your reseal kit. Take the time to do it right and you'll have a reliable engine that you can be proud of. The shift rod bushing tool from F_R is worth it's weight in gold, and very inexpensive. I finally bought one and wish I'd done it a long time ago.
Good luck...

No the spaghetti seal alone is not enough. Use the seal, along WITH the 847.

When you do pull the powerhead pay attention to the lower crankshaft seal and components that will be on the very top of the driveshaft that goes into the lower side of the engine. Make sure all the parts are there and you should replace the seals while you have it apart. I think I would also replace the impeller while I had it apart. Cheap insurance.
