I have recently purchased a 1956 Evinrude Big Twin 30hp ES.
I have a problem which I have determined to be the clutch dog. Can anyone suggest a downloadable or online purchase for a good DETAILED service manual for removal and disassembly of the lower unit. If not online which book should I buy?

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The members here are great and the experts, which I am not, can help you with any problem. The link below will get you to a Johnson factory service manual and info for the RD model should be identical to your Evinrude Big Twin. Good luck with that great old motor!

Here is your parts manual

What has led you to guarantee that it is the clutch dog? Hopefully not, getting harder to find and not cheap. Marine engine has them for 65 bucks.

I purchased the boat a couple weeks ago. Finally had a chance to water test. At low rpm boat is fine 1/4 throttle it slips out of gear. I check adjustment seems to be fine. I bought a nos clutch dog $30. Used lower unit $100. Thought I would rebuilt. Interesting I was cleaning the garage this morning and notice lube oozing out the lower unit. Also seems to have water infiltration. I don't know the history of The motor, It was suppose to have new water pump. Any ideas or thoughts? Am I headed in the right direction?

Hi westopolis. Cool old motor you've got there. Here are some handy links that can help you get it up and running again. Don't worry about the oil dripping from the LU for now, it's probably just unburnt fuel/oil/exhaust draining out. These old 2-strokes are a bit messy. It's just the nature of the beast. As long as the gear oil itself isn't milky/white you should be fine. However, if/when you do reseal the lower unit, you'll need some 3M 847 gasket sealant in addition to the seals themselves.

It may have a new water pump, that wouldnt mean they went into the skeg assembly though, so there may be issues there.

If you are going to open the skeg up and change the clutch dog, I would reseal it while you are at it. Would be silly to do it later and have to open it up again. The reseal kit is cheap, about 25 bucks or so, it is mainly just time, and if you will have it opened up anyways kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Ill post some more info for you when I get on my desktop.

Thanks for the great links. I Agree I'll rebuild the entire LU. The lube leaking appears to be 90 weight and does seem to have water in it. My plan is to rebuild the LU I just purchased, replace seals, pump, clutch dog, ect. Is there anything else that normally needs attention?

Nice looking motor. Boat looks very nice too.

Looks like your plan is complete for the LU.

Good luck on the rebuild and :welcome: to iboats.

i picked up my clutch dog at the erude dealer no problem hightrim
Just a shot in the dark to see if you are still on here, I have that exact outboard with the same problem. Could you tell me the part number for the clutch dog and the other parts you had to get? Also all the links to the manual are dead now so if you or anyone else knows where to find one it would help me out so much! Thanks for anyone who replies!
