I've been working on a 1956 Lark 30hp. Got the electrical in good order and carb rebuilt, lowe unit seals, and now have the wiring harness sorted out. I was just getting ready to fire her up from my 12 volt car battery and got to thinking - hmmm- I think this is a 6 volt system. Am I correct? Starter is an Autolite MDH-4001M.

If it is original it is a 6-volt system. Won't hurt to use a 12V battery as long as you don't stay on the switch. Keep pushing volts through it and it will fry. It should crank and fire off pretty quickly if it is correct and tuned properly.

Tim - so if I go get a 6 volt battery I guess I will need a 6 volt starter solenoid also. I hooked up a spare solenoid from my '57 Lark.

Almost everybody is now using 12 volt batteries on those 6V systems. It won't hurt it if you use it in brief short bursts, with cooling in between. Actually, that's all it needs. If it is going to run properly, it will start instantly.
