The add says it's a 56 10 hp, I'm not sure. I didn't think the lower unit had that top bolt on 10 hp models.

I just looked at an ad for a 56 10hp and it shows that bolt. And it says sportwin like the one in my picture.

It is a 10hp. The 10's before '58 had the 5 bolt LU the same as the 18hp. From '58 on they shrunk the LU to the 5.5/7.5 size and then it was a 4 bolt. They did this to save weight. The 58's were advertised as 7 lbs less in weight I believe it was...

What are they asking for it?

Buck and a half, with the tank. I'm tempted, even though I'm holding out for an 18. I'm gona call him Friday. Heck, the tank's worth a hundred.

Re: 1956 Evinrude

Not too bad with a good tank and good compression. Does it have good compression?

Also with the older 10's with the 5 bolt LU the weight was only about 8 lbs less than the 18's, so I do highly recommend an 18 if you can find it as you mention. I have many and love the power/weight ratio...

I haven't talked to the guy personally, but his ad says it runs good. Here's a picture of the tank.

I'm running 66 Johnson 20 hp on my 14' v-bottom now and really want an 18 fastwin just to have one of each. I don't really have much use for a 10

I've been looking for an old outboard like that, I'd say for 150, and it comes with a tank, if it runs, I'd buy it.

from the pictures, it doesn't look like it's to beat up, the lower unit looks to be a slightly different color then the rest of the outboard, like it might have been repaired or changed out at some point in it's life, so I'd take a look at the LU and check it out real good.

just my 2 cents ....Stuart

Re: 1956 Evinrude

I picked up a 56 15 hp that's similar for $150 with a tank. The different color on the LU looks similar to mine, but it looks like on both that is a typical area where the paint fades or gasoline washes it off after the years.
