If the seal starts leaking water into the power head what would the first symptoms be on engine operation? I presume a guy would have to remove the power head to check the seal?

Unfortunatly, like high blood pressure, it is the silent killer. It will run just fine without the seal. The first symptom usually is destroyed roller bearings. By then it is too late. Yes, you have to remove the powerhead.
