I have a 10 h.p. Johnson. When I first bought it this spring it ran great. Then I tried to replace the low speed spring that keeps the pointer from moving. It has not ran well since. It fouls plugs and now will run to get me out in the lake then will not refire. I am lost on this!! Anyone have any Ideas I would be HAPPY!!! to listen. Thanks, Mousty

Could this be a fuel issue?

OK, so I sound like a broken record, but gotta ask you this--have the coils been replaced? If not, they need to be. Over 99% odds that is what is wrong with it.

Did you bugger up the setting on the low speed mixture while working on the spring? Have you tried re-adjusting it? Turn it in gently until set, then back it out 1.5 turns and adjust it from there...

People do it themselves every day. Some folks do it right and some muck it up. You need a flywheel puller to get it off, and a torque wrench to put it back on. Torque the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs.

Those coils are notorious for cracking. You can almost go to the bank on it. You can buy new ones at a good discount price right here at iboats. Takes two. Check out your breaker points while you are in there. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=109172&gd_row=32&**********=892622357

whilst you.re in there it makes sense to run new plug wires too, that way everything under the cap is new, don't pull everything off, do one side before the other or you'll get lost.
It all looks simple when everything is in place, but if you pull all the old parts it will look like a rotary rubic cube when you try to install the new parts.

someone else...uh..told me.

PS, my coils looked like that photo, mine were 1959 and probably original.

I Replaced the coils! The others looked good but I had new ones so I put them in anyway. Replaced points and condensers. set points to .020. put back together. had nice blue, strong spark on both cylinders. started up ran bout 5 minutes! same thing will not start with choke or nothing???? I am stumped??? Any other Ideas?

Sounds like fuel issue then, maybe something floating around in there thats clogging the line temporarily, try rebuilding and cleaning the carbs

It seems that when the engine get hot it won't run. Checked fuel filter, bulb ok?

Is it overheating? You should be able to hold you fingers on the head for a few seconds when it's running. Be careful of burning yourself or sticking your fingers in the flywheel. I use an infrared thermometer from Harbor Freight.

It is pretty warm with a minute or 2 running. Seems to be spitting water out exhaust. Is it in need of a new impeller? Will this shut the engine down? Would this year motor have a Stator?
