Hi,
My 1956 Johnson 15 hp Model #FD10 has a lot of compression. I try to turn up it. Put new coils, new condensers and new points. Still have no spark? Check the coils by ohms meter, the coils are good.
Anyone has a idea?

Have you checked the spark plug wires? Any corrosion on the ends? I'm suprised after new coils, cond., and points that you don't have spark on at least one wire. What was your procedure on setting the points? Are you sure your flywheel key is good and your flywheel hasn't spun a little? I hope you get it running. I've been wanting an FD-10 for quite a while now.

I took everythings apart and put together again. I had good continuity between the coil and end of the spark plug wire. I have done re-gap the point (0.020") and checked the timing with Ohm meter. Still NO SPARK ???
Check the Coil valve by the Ohm meter, Good reading.
All parts are NEW. What could be wrong ?

Do you have good strong magnets in the flywheel? Is the air gap between the coil cores and flywheel correct(too big a gap will cause a very weak or no spark)? Is the flywheel key OK?(magnets coming by at wrong time could be the problem). Also be sure there is not a coat of lacquer on the points faces, clean them with lacquer thinner, and test that they have continuity to ground when closed with the coil disconnected from them.

The only thing I did not do is changing the new spark plug. I will get a new plug and try out. But I don't think the plug is make the different. I will swap a flywheel from other Evinrude which has spark and runs to see if the magnet is flywheel is a main problem. The flywheel key is Ok since I replace with a new one.

I know this may sound really stupid, but are you spinning the engine over the correct direction?

Got the coils wired to the correct set of points?? Got the coil primary and ground leads reversed?? Got the cam on right side up? Had the rubbing block at the highest point of the cam when adjusting the gap?

With all new parts, it has to be a error on your part, and all we can do is guess what you did wrong.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestion. I did spin the engine correctly.
I know that I wire correctly (black wire of the coil to ground and green wire to the point) I also have done tune-up a couple old outboards successfully (1974 4Hp Evinrude, 1951 10 Hp Evirude. 1952 15 Hp Elto). All of them share the same components. I will take my 1952 15 Hp Elto armature assembly (have very strong spark with all new parts) and put it on this engine and do vise-versa to find out what wrong. Will post the results.

I had the same trouble with my electric start 15 and then decided to trace back all the wiring connections - particularly the battery posts and the leads from the motor. It worked.

I just got an FD-10 last week that is complete except for the ignition plate. Hope I don't have the same problems when I put it together!

Bingo !!! I install a flywheel from other Evinrude motor on this motor and spin it by hand. I have spark. This flywheel is different style from FD 10 but it fits on. I think problem is the air gap between the flywheel and the coil. The magnet on FD 10 flywheel is strong as the other Evinrude so it is not the magnet problem.

Today, I put this original flywheel back to the engine and it runs !!! so it is not flywheel problem. It was the spark plug it just works with Champion 4JC but not 6JC.

The engine starts at first or second pull but it vibrates and shakes at low speed. Is it because of timing not exact or flywheel unbalance or caburator adjustment ? Does anyone know how to correct this issue ?

its gonna shake and vibrate some......... its an old 2-stroke.

did you set the carb per joe reeves method?

If you didn't remove the flywheel correctly and bent it, then it could cause the motor to shake more than normal. Some of your conclusions about your motor are strange. There's no way it will run on J4C plugs and not J6C plugs unless the J6C plugs are bad. The timing pretty much is correct if your flywheel key is good.

Yes, two of my J6C plugs were bad. I have tested it with other running engine. No spark. I did some lapping on the flywheel. May be it was not enough. I will remove it and redo one more time.

Yes, Finally I got it runing like champ with all new spark plug, coils, points, condensers and rebuilt cab kit. All parts were ordered from iboats for less than $80.00. It is a solid motor. After decab with seafoam, it had a lot of compression and started after a second pull. I am still using presurized gas tank. I will convert to single line next summer.
One thing wrong with my motor was the spark plug (old enough and could not produce spark). Hopefully you can learn from my lesson.
