I have a lower unit issue with either the gears or the clutch as I am told, there is metal in the oil when drained and it will not shift forward and sounds like the gears or dragging on each other without meshing up.

What I would like to know if any of you can help is:

1. What other lower units will merry up with it?

2. Any idea where to locate gears clutch etc?

3. Anyone have the above described problem?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Have the model number handy and call Tim's outboard. They can tell you if anything else will match up, and if they have used clutch dog/gears for it. Lower unit may be the same as the 18 fastwins ('57 and later, johnson 18's too) and if it is, many models' lower units will work. 218-682-2331

No, unfortunately, the 5.5hp and 7.5hp are the smaller lower units.:( From what I understand, they would work on a 10hp, 1963 and later but that's about the smallest motor they will interchange with.

The 1958-63 10 hp lower unit will not work. It is a smaller lower unit based on the same housing as the 1954-63 5.5 - 7.5 hp. You can use any OMC 10-15 hp lower unit from 1955-57 or any 18 hp lower unit as an assembly from 1957-76?.

oh really? I was told the 10hp went to the smaller lower unit about 1963. Oh well, I guess I was told wrong.

It's not hard to open those up and have a look around. The metal shavings could be clutch dog shavings. Clutch dogs and seals aren't hard to do...but you need a factory manual. If it binds and grinds, could be a bad clutch dog and a toasted gear or two. Complete lower units aren't hard to find, but it's best to know what you are buying.

very true. You can actually go into one of these and fix the problem as cheap as buying a whole new lower unit and you don't have to remove it from the motor.

Don't know if this helps, it is a 1956 Evinrude Fastwin LU assembly. They are the same (I believe) Rick
