Hello my name is john and i have a 1956 johnson 5.5 horse power. I recently did a tune up and doesnt want to start on me. I change the spark plugs, replace new coils and rebuild my carb. Before it would start up with 1 or 2 pull even though i had cracks on each of my coils. But it would only get up as fast as my 40 pd thrust trolling motor. So I decided replace my crack coils and to tune it up and now it doesnt want to turn over. I took the fly wheel off and check my coils and it seems like the negative wire had been rubbing against the wheel which the inner core wire are showing. This is my first motor and I have no clue what im doing except reading through forums just to help me by. If theres anybody who can help me out I would be really grateful for their time. I would glady take this motor to the shop but the shop in my city would not service any old motor like mine which they told me the service will cost more then the motor it self. So now I decided to replace my condesor and points which its is on order. Is there anything eles i need to know or do to get this baby running if so please let me know?

thanks john from cali

When your outboard won't start the first thing to do is find out what is wrong. Changing parts on a guess often creates more problems, but it is too late for that now.

Go to "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs. Maybe there is only one thing wrong. If so that will find it.

For future reference, everyone needs a Service Manual to work on an outboard. . . especially for the first time.

compression? but he has already gone with the project ya make sure u torque the flywheel to the proper spec also and by the way i would suggest u check for spark before u tighten it down

do u guys think i might of fried my coils because when i took off my fly wheel and look at my wires from the coils were rubbing against the fly wheel which made a cut on both of the 2 coils. Is their any possible way to check the coils?

If the coil wires have bare spots they can ground out and the motor won't run.

ok i went back and change my sparkplug wires and mess with the points and finaly got spark. The spark is yellow is that the kind of spark color u should be having or is the spark suppose to be blue. It starts now but with 5 to 7 pull and now i have to have the throttle set to fast to get it started. It seems like im not getting enough gas also. Any ideas becuase i change the spark plug, spark plug wires, condensors, points coils but havent check the compression and now my motor is still doing the same as before.

ok dont even touch the timing its fine. ur coils dont have the greatest insulation on the wire. mine accidently broke and had to fix the spot. it was the green wire was cut on the insuation. just put some rubber tape and wrap around once. and tuck them away prettty good form the flywheel thing.

look at carb adjments see how they are

i think its the carb adjustment, becasue when i put the needle in the carb with out the little muffler it works but when i put everything back together it doesnt start. Is the top needle suppossed to go in first then u put on the needle in or does the needle go in after. I think im getting closer to my problem....anyone got a pics of the carb or how they go back together...?..

thanks,,,,

.

cracked coils are cracked coils. even if they are firing he needed to change them. My guess is he does not have the points gapped right or a bad condenser

the spark should be blue and capable of jumping 1/4 of an inch in open air. yellow spark can be an indication of weak condensors. Are you sure you have the points set at .020? On the crank will be an ecentric with the word "top" on it. It is at the "top" that you should set the points.

u must fix the spark problem its not right. thats a crucial item.

the carb ameks rue u put the right needle high and low in the right spot. the high goes on the bottom. low speed is top. screw them in and tighten very gently. then u put ur packigns in about 2-3 in each hole around the needles. put the nut on and tighten a bit till it stays on there. then u turn the high speed out 3/4 of a turn and low speed 1 1/2 out of a turn. then tighten the packing nut to where its tight but to tight to where u cant turn it. put ur knobs back on. ur high speed u want all the way to the rich side because ur will be turning it in.

now go in the faqs section and loook up carb adjuments and do them next time ur on the water.

when u said u did a tune up can u list the things that u did?

i change the spark plugs, sparkplug wire, condensor, coils, points and rebuild my carb. I also went back and adjust my points to the right way and now its running smoothly. I think what i did wrong was mess with the carb needle and mess it up. What that cause my motor to not start?

Thanks alot guys and gals for all ya help.

i check my spark with a sparkplug tester from autozone, it emits sparks when it has spark. Is there any other way to test spark other then using the spark tester or can i test it the way how we test on car sparkplugs?
