Now that I have my CD-13 running again, I need to shift to the next problem. That is, I'm having a difficult time getting from FWD to NEU to REV. When I do get it into FWD, it will stay there and doesn't seem to slip out. But, I can't get it back into NEU or REV without a lot of back and forth shifting. When it does come out and into NEU, I have a similar problem getting into REV and back out to NEU.

Is there an adjustment I can get to from the outside, or am I looking at removing the lower unit/gearbox. I also have water in the LU oil.

Thanks,
Marv

are you shifting while running, or just on a stand?

Shifting while running. Sitting on the stand it seems to shift and go into gear, evidenced by being able to turn over with the prop.

***edit***

I just checked again, it's the same either way.

Are you saying there is a lot of loose slop in the shifter handle? Sorry, you have to remove the powered to get at the bellcrank lever inside. However....if the problem is in the lower unit, you still have to remove the powerhead to get the lower unit off, so you aren't wasting your time.

Kind of sounds like the cradle in the lower unit is worn out. If it is worn out, it is from lack of lubrication and expect a lot of other stuff in there to be worn out also. Make sure the pinion bearing in the gearcase casting isn't worn egg-shaped before you go too far. That bearing is not replaceable.

can you feel it clicking into the shift rod detents? ( there are three notches on the lower part of the shift rod, and a flat spring with a hump in it that holds things in place).
other than that, if there is water intrusion, you will need to remove the powerhead and open up the gearcase to reseal and inspect .jmo

Can you tell me which part I'm looking for? Page 16. Vintage Evinrude Johnson Outboard Parts & Diagrams - Catalog 376744

Yes, I can feel the detents, and it does feel a bit sloppy compared to my AD-10, which I believe share the same lower leg?
