Howdy:

I have a 1956 Mercury Mark 55 I plan on restoring. I noticed that some special tools made specifically for this motor are used to work on the lower unit and water pump. Can anyone tell me if these tools are absolutely necessary? Do I really need these tools to work on the lower unit and water pump? They are no longer available, I have come to find out, and some folks are charging absolutely OUTRAGEOUS prices for some of them on ebay. I'd like to work on this engine, but I don't want to break the bank to do it.

Any comments from those who have worked on the old Mark engines will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your replies.

My guess would be that working on anything 48 years old is going to cost $ $ $ $
DHP

Re: 1956 Mercury Mark 55 tool questions

I made my own tools for the gearcase, prop shaft carrier and impeller housing. I restored one of those white anchors years ago and swore I would never again no matter how much I was paid.
it is a sweet motor when right though. you may try a place in wisconson I think its called skipper buds or skipper b's I got a lot of NLA obsolete stuff from them.
good luck and keep posting

Hi TSutter,
Think plumbing fixtures. I've seen some very good homemade tools made out of pipe junction pieces and couplings...
- Scott
