well the flywheel stripped the peg or whatever it is that keeps the flywheel in the right place on the crankshaft. i cant tell if its a replaceable part or if its a permanent part on the crankshaft. i drilled a hole where it was and put a set screw in the hole to peg the flywheel in place but the motor still wont start. there were a few times it would almost start and make a little smoke but it never picked up and ran. it kinda ran before it stripped but wouldnt idle low without bucking. did the flywheel kill the coils by running crazy.i donk know but ive had the motor 5 days and i doubt i'll make it a week without dropping it at the dump unless someone thinks its an easy fix?!

if you sheared your flywheel key, you just need to go down and get a new one. I wouldn't do any jerry riggin on that motor. It should take the same key, as 1956 Johny/Rude 15hp.

thank you zephyr. how would i take the sheared key out. theres nothing to grab it by. it looks like it goes down into the collar that tha points ride on to open and close em but i cant figure how ta get it out. the wheel is pegged to stay in place now but when i pull the rope with a plug wire test light on the plug it is very faint and wont get the engine running so do ya think i killed the coils or the condensers or both?! or niether? thanx again!!!!

The points cam should just slide right up off of the crankshaft. Once you remove the cam, use a tiny flat blade screw driver and pry the old flywheel key out.

thanx. i'll try this and see if it corrects the weak spark issue in the process.

Re: 1956 sea king 12 hp flywheel issues

Flywheel keys shear because somebody has installed the flywheel incorrectly. Every time it happens, it damages the flywheel and shaft. Do it enough times and you have junk.

1. The flywheel and shaft tapers MUST be clean and dry. And not all beat up.
2. You MUST use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs.

Failure to follow the rules causes sheared keys and damaged parts.
