Hello,
i am getting ready to reseal a lower unit on a 1957 evinrude 35hp.
there is scoring on the shaft below the impeller where it sits in the seal/bearing.
I have not had one of these apart enough to know exactly what surface contacts here. If it is the seal, can i polish it out? If so, what would be the minimum diameter allowed?
i pulled the driveshaft out of 2 other lower units out of curiosity and they all have similar Scoring. I assume this is fairly common?
i would rather not pat a shop to build it up if it isnt necessary.

They all wear where they contact the seal and also the bushing below it. Sorry, I am too far away to pass judgement, only you can make that decision. But I can be pretty forgiving of minor faults

I was thinking that a little undersized but polished was better than rough.
I didnt want to put in a new seal and shred it immediately.

Well yeah, but the purpose of the seal is to keep gear oil in and water out. Maybe a little careful sanding.

I had an old 7.5 that had a groove on driveshaft and was leaking. I installed new seal, but didn’t quite seat it, so the ds groove was just below seal. Also brushed a little nail polish around seal perimeter to ensure against a leak there. It worked fine for years..maybe still is somewhere 😎

Its too bad the shaft ends aren't the same. Then you could just flip them over
when one sealing surface was too worn out.
