Another question regarding my 57 35 hp, I know that the manual specifies J4C plug type, but I have used the J6C. I note that the J6C plug is more favoured if a lot of trolling is done. I don't troll much, but cruise at speed normally bringing the engine to WOT then backing off to allow the fuel saver system to kick in when conditions allow. Should I use the J4C?....any advantages with this plug?

Paul moir,and all. Thanks for all the help last year. I just started my rde-19c for the first time of the year. started 1st turn run great. my question is where is the best place to get a carb kit ? oem or napa ? vintage outboards has them float and all for 34 bucks including shipping . anyone ever used these kits ? thanks again .

I'm glad to hear it's running well. <br /><br />Get the OEM one. It's ony a couple bucks more but it comes with a plastic float to replace the troublesome cork one. I say comes with, I should really say ought to come with. Sometimes it seems people end up getting some dealer's old stock cork ones.<br /><br />P/N is 439074, available from a number of places. List is about $30, can be found for less. Might try your local dealer. Often it's the best.

Thanks Mr. Moir ,<br /> I was out running the motor in the yard a minute ago and was looking at the loud exhaust outlet. wonder if a feller could run a pipe down the back of the motor to quiet the exhaust some ? Maybe just above or just below the water. without thru hub exhaust would backpressure be an issue ?

Once you have it in the water,it will be a lot quieter.The exhaust comes out of the triangle shaped metal piece behind the propeller.This by the way is also where the water intake is

Sea horse 44 mentioned first post that that carb was adjusted lean as possible.I think when a motor works so hard carb should be adjusted to best speed and then turned toward rich to just before it affects the tune.To lean may burn things.

rolmop, I understand the exhaust is below the top outlet but there is a good bit of noise at the top hole where the water and exhaust exit. I still hear it very well with the boat in the water. the hole is actually about 3/8 . I guess its also for a telltale for water also. not coplaining about it just wondering if I could quiet her down a little. I put my hand over it in the barrel while running and it made a world if difference. <br />steelspike , I agree with you on the carb adjustment and do it the same way as you. I turned the low speed needle completely off today and not much change in the motor. just a little speed up. It continues to run too. so that tells me I have to rebuild and clean the carb. I think my factory cork float is sinking some causing a rich mixture and actually very rich condition. maybe some of my fuel consumption problem. <br />On another question I finally got my tiny tach and it must me the wrong one fot my 2cycle . it runs twice the rpm so its for a 4 cycle i guess. The number on it is 19389 and briggs and stratton on the package. there are no adjustment on it either. works great though . still tell me about my prop. I want her to run around 5000 right ? I have a 101/2 X 11 now. Thanks fellers fine board !

Yeah, 5000 is fine, but not any higher. Really I think your right around ideal. The tiny tach may be picking up interference from the other spark plug lead - see if you can run the pickup or plug wires so they are good and far apart. I think they were supposed to send you one with a little filter on it, but I'm not exactly TinyTach Tech Support. <br /><br />That hole needs to be above the water line, it allows the exhaust out at idle. With the engine in neutral and at idle, it can't push the exhaust gasses down under the water without loading up and stalling. You'll notice all outboards have some form of exhaust relief on them for that purpose. The water exiting along with the exhaust helps silence it, but that's really it. It's possible that there's a little cover inside the midsection that's really warped bad making the sound worse, but it's really quite a lot of work to even check never mind repair.<br /><br />The '58 and '59 super quiet 35hp engines really help for silencing.<br /><br />By the way, you know that your engine is a '58 right? There were two very different '58 35hp engines, the super quite and the regular. Mr. Moir,<br /> I have the regular one . I knew it was a 58 , think you told me that last year. kinda thought that little hole may cause me trouble if closed. Im gonna experiment with it a little. I have i think is a rds-22 40 horse superquiet Im thinkin about restorin someday too. Had a 35 superquiet when i was a kid. fine motor. As far as the tiny tach goes I was looking at the tiny tach site a little bit ago and it agrees with you on the interference, glad to hear that . Im gonna replace my plug wires sometime anyhow there just old. I need copper core wires from what I read on here. I guess you remember the HT wires on the timing plate run very close together. maybe thats the area causing the interference . Maybe new wires would help . Motor is almost like new . thanks for the help too .

1958 seahorse update. got my carb kit yesterday and installed it today . Paul, I got the cork float too . didnt want it but it came in the box. I dont really like the rubber tip needle valve either but I also used it. Clean as a whistle . it was running good before but a tad bit rough at idle. the bushing was spinning in the low speed needle not letting me adjust properly too. Packing was about gone. gonna wire up my new tach right and my vacuum cutout switch and we will see how she goes. thanks for all the help .
