I replaced the coils condensers and points on my evinrude 1957 big twin 35. After I checked for spark by rotating the flywheel I have spark one one plug and not the other. After removing the flywheel I noticed the flywheel touches one coil slightly and the other is not. Should the flywheel contact the metal sections on the outermost part of the coils?

Have a look in the top secret files at the beginning of this forum. There are pics of how the coils should be mounted relative to the mounting bosses. ( to far back=weak spark. To far out = rubbing the fw)

As stated above, you want them as far out as you can without touching. Too far in will limit spark. You can use a coil locating ring, doubt you have that, so just align the laminations with the edge of the mounting boss. If you run your nail up mounting boss, and it catches on laminations, push coil in more.

Also reclean points, even when new they need cleaning before use. Fingerprints limit spark. Dip business card or paper stock in acetone or laqeur thinner and run it through few times after setting.

You replaced the coils but not the plug wires? False economy, even if the wires look good. The insulation breaks down and the high voltage arcs to ground -- no spark.

I had replaced the wires too. I adjusted the points and readjusted the coils and readjusted and readjusted.......I have spark on both plugs now. However I used a spark checker and can't get it to jump a 1/4" gap. The sparks are visible but not thick nor blue. I have 90 compression in both cylinders with the pull start. Any ideas? I still can't get it started.

not much point in re-adjusting the coils....flush with the mounting boss's is where they are set. are you pulling the cord when checking for spark, or just turning the fw by hand? does it even make a puff of smoke when trying to start it? clean the points and then clean em again.
