Hi Does anyone have more than the basic information on the 1957 Brooklure 1200 some say it is closely modeled after the evinrude 15 hp. I have one I'm repairing for a customer.
Thanks Mike

A quick internet search and there are parts available and a club of guys that own them. I never understood how folks can navigate the internet to find and join this forum, but don't know how to perform a simpe Google search. Crazy.

I had to look it up. Appears the entire line was manufactured by OMC and sold through Spiegle. So parts should be available. Post some pictures of the motor and power head so we can identify which motor it’s cousin to

Wow two replies that don't have anything to add that isn"t the very basic info available from the info sections on Iboats.

Let's start with a confirmation that it indeed is a 1957. Model number 50T3338 (Gale model 12D15)? Do you have any more-specific questions you want answers to?

True that is closely related to the Evinrude / Johnson 15hp, but with some important differences. Powerhead has major internal differences. Smaller bore. Silver plated aluminum connecting rods instead of roller bearings.

If there is a one thing that most often destroys the motor, it would be the lower crankshaft seal, part number 303804. They fail, and admit water to the crankcase, which destroys those silver plated rods. Yes, the E/J 15 has the same seal, but the damage to the rods is less dramatic. Nevertheless, still fatal.

BTW, there is a superseded part number for the 303804, 0321467. I have no long-term reliability experience with it.

Thank you F_R Yes it is in fact a 50T3338serial Number 763634 Which according to the internet puts it as a 1957 and I have read that the evinrude15hp bore size was increased in 1957 But I wasn't sure what the original Evinrude bore size was. Although I have repaired or restored over 50 1954-1980 OMC I only do the smaller motors from 3-25 hp and have never redone a 1950's 15hp and so have nothing to go by as I am unable to find a Brooklure parts list.
I take it the lack of roller bearings makes it a 16:1 mix motor.
Would you know if it shares the base gasket with the 50's evinrude?
making a powerhead swap possible if needed
Thanks Mike

12hp Gale bore size was 2-1/4"
15hp J/E bore was 2-3/8"
18hp J/E bore was 2-1/2"

12hp base gasket was 303892, but was superseded by 377070 baffle plate and (2) thinner gaskets kit. The idea was to keep the exhaust away from that troublesome seal. Really didn't make that much difference. The seals still failed.

12hp head gasket was 552181 because of the smaller bore.

Fuel mix was 24:1

Obviously, I have the parts list.

Thanks F_R
It looks like the head and base gasket are still available. It has 80psi dry compression in both cylinders and both the old spark plugs are burning the same so I'm not expecting any bad seals in the powerhead. I'll know more when the lower parts and the carb kit comes when I can test it in the test tank
