My little evinrude runs great, but the prop will not turn. The lower unit seems fine, and it is definetly not the dawg. I cannot seem to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Waterman, Somewhere between the powerhead and the prop, you have a problem. Start with the shear pin and work back until you find something broken. Be sure that it is going into gear when you shift it. Good luck, David

I actually removed the dawg and installed a bushing so the lower unit is always in gear. (just as a test). Even when the engine is not running, and I pull the cord, it does not turn. The spline shaft at the powerhead appears immaculate. The gears in the lower unit seem to be in excellent shape as well. Is there an intermediate link or adjustment I am missing?

Waterman, Take the lower unit apart and watch the shaft as you pull the cord. If it does not turn you have found your problem in the shaft assembly, If it does turn, the problem is in the foot.

David

First can you spin the prop with the engine off and in either forward or reverse. If you can it's either a bad prop or shear pin.
Do you have any metal filings in the oil?

What I believe you might be looking at is a broken coupler. Just below the water pump housing is a spring coupler. It couples the upper and lower drive shafts and is suppose to absorb drive train shock. What you'll find is the spring inside is broken. If you find it is broken make sure you examine the water pump base very carefully. On mine it chewed up the lower part of the housing and on another that I know of it actually pushed the housing upwards cracking the housing. Parts were about $60-70 used.

A couple good taps from a hammer will jar it loose from the driveshaft if its bad and will not let go.
