1957 Evinrude 5.5hp - lower unit help

Last fall the spring clutch let go and chewed up the waterpump base. After pulling the lower unit apart (last fall) and splitting the gear case, I'm finally getting around to putting it back together. I have already purchased a new/used waterpump base and spring clutch assy. The impeller has only 2hrs on it and have new seal kit.
I'm looking for some answers as to what shims/spacers belong where, what kind of sealant is recommended for the o-rings/spaghetti (I've been using permatex #2) and any other hints or gotchas that you have run into. Oh, the prop shaft does have some groves from the prop seal when should I become concerned with them?

P.S. I do have a manual. but it says "due to the number of years this manual covers your setup may differ slightly from the diagrams shown" AAAAAHHHHHHHH>>>

You can get a real manual here http://ww3.kencook.com or watch ebay for one. I haven't looked at my generic manuals once since I got the original OMC ones. There is a parts catalog on ebay right now for your motor. That might show how all the parts are oriented.

To seal the gearcase halves (spagetti seal) use 3M Scotch-Grip Rubber & Gasket Adhesive 847. Hard to find that stuff but any JonnyRude dealer should have it. Apparently that's the replacement for OMC Sealant 1000 or whatever the old stuff was called. There is another brand of sealant 1000 but I was never able to find it and don't remember what it was called. Any gasket sealing compound for the seals and o-rings. But I don't think you want it on every o-ring you find. Maybe someone else can specify that.

[EDIT] Forgot to add that all of the prop shafts on the motors I've worked are scored at the seal. None have leaked there after being resealed. Not that they never will but it seems that it has to get pretty bad before they leak.

I have a 63 evinrude 5.5, and I am trying to remove the lower unit to see why the water pump won't pump. But I can't get the unit off because the shifter shaft is stuck. Is thier anything I can do to disconnect the shaft.

Sure, pull the powerhead. That's the way it was made and that's the way it is. There is a reason for it, which you will discover. The carbon seal would fall apart if you were able to get the lower unit off without pulling the powerhead. Make sure that seal is 100% right and use a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring. Failure to do so may result in powerhead destruction.
