I have a 1957 evinrude big twin 35. I am using the two handle evinrude simplex control box. I have trouble with the boat staying in forward gear when using the controls. I have to push and almost hold the control forward or it pops out of gear. If I disconnect the control cable and just shift manually there is no problem. Any ideas? Also, I have replaced the control cables with brand new ones and I had the problem with the old ones too.

There is some sort of a tension knob on the shift box. Although i cant remember if it was only for the throttle stiffness. Would be well worth taking that box apart again and making sure everything moves with clearance the way it should. I believe in the manual it says the cable should be crimped with little to none sticking out the end. just visible basically.

Have you also tried adjusting the length of the travel in the cable? at the back where the shift cable clicks onto the motor mount there should be a black plastic piece on threads. Try spinning it.

So put your shifter in forward gear. then at the back of the motor twist that plastic piece until you get the desired result.

the worst case scenario would be worn out gears in the clutch dog. you would have to tear apart the lower end to confirm this. if this is confirmed you have two options.

Find a parts motor with a blown head for cheap or, as some people have done, switch the reverse and forward gears as reverse is likely in much better shape.

Many people have done this since no one seems to mind loosing reverse (or simply holding the shifter when in reverse as is your case)

If it shifts and stays in gear when shifted manually with cable disconnected, the motor itself is ok. Now you have to find out why the control cable won't pull the motor's shifter handle all the way forward. Only an on-site inspection can tell that.

Note: Always adjust the control to fit the motor, NEVER adjust the motor to fit the control.

Sound advice. Control needs close inspection. I might add not to run much until it is taken care of as the clutch dogs will thank you for it

Is the tension spring present on the motor? It is located at the top of the inner shift lever and puts pressure on the detents at the bottom of the lever.

Ok sorry it took so long......I took the boat out and disconnected the shift cable. I had no jerking or popping out of gear issues. I then hooked up the cable and adjusted the threaded dial in all locations and had the jerking mostly in the beginning and until I reach plane then it's pretty good after that but not perfect. It has done this since I have acquired the boat. Should I try a new control box?
