I picked up a Fleetwin 18, 1957 about a month ago. Hopes are to get it in good running shape and put it on my 1963 14' Lone*Star Big Fisherman. PO stated it sat in a barn for 18 years.

It has spark and compression, lower unit has good looking fluid, gears engage properly.

Tank holds pressure but it looks like there is at least a 1/4" of crap in it. I get into that later, I have another tank.

I've been slowly picking at it and cleaning it. Putting my to do list together and checking prices.

I popped off the inspection plate and next the flywheel.

This is what I was expecting. Coils, breakers, condensors and wires on my list.

I haven't touched the carb yet, but a rebuild kit with a float and new fuel lines are on my list.

The lower end came off pretty easy. The drive shaft O-ring was toast. That and the impeller are on my list.

Now I'm trying to figure out the condition of the impeller housing and plate. I can't get the machine screws to budge so far. I'm trying to let some PB Blaster soak in from the bottom of the holes. I don't want to break them off, PITA. Any suggestions?

Well, there is no "hopeful resurection" about it. That will be a very fine running ang reliable motor once you get it tuned.

Lone Star Big Fisherman huh? SWEET!! I happen to own a '59 Lone Star Newport, myself. That 18 of yours will be the best choice you could possibly have made. Keep us posted. :D

Nice motor! I use an impact screwdriver to loosen stuck screws. The kind you strike with a mallet. As you strike it, the screw driver bit will turn on impact. It works well but, be gentle. Those screws haven't been touched for years so, they're going to need some coaxing. You have a good list going so far. You may be pleasantly surprised at the availability of parts.

I traded up to the Lone*Star, even trade for a 12' Sea King. I have a 61' 5.5hp Johnson on the transom, but when I saw the Fastwin I had to jump. Boat hasn't hit the water yet and it won't till spring now.

I've been doing a lot of searches here on these Fastwins. They seem to be a great set up. I know I'll get a lot of help when I need it.

I like it so far, and after it's running, I'll love it.:D

I have enough tools for 5 guys and the impact screwdriver is one I don't seem to have. I swear I used to have one about 10 years ago. Have to keep digging.

I've been trying the tapping on the screwdriver as I turn it but nothing so far. I was thinking of trying some heat tomorrow.

I think that ol' "Ole" has good potential. I would try heat on the screws, just be careful. If you get things too hot and twist too hard the screws might pull the threads in the aluminum. I have a '54 15 HP Fastwin. Had it about 5 yrs and all I've had to do so far is replace the coils due to insulation cracking. Changed points and condensors also. It runs like a clock all day and starts very easy hot or cold. I hope someday to give it a fresh original paint job and new decals.
Try dropping a handful of 3/8" nuts along w/ a little kerosene in the tank and rock it around for awhile to see if that will clean it up. I suggest nuts instead of rocks because you can get them out w/ a magnet.

I was just in the basement restoring the same motor. I was originally going to sell this one, but I do think I will keep it. Would of had the gearcase resealed but the dealer was short a seal, ah well there is always tomorrow!

kfa - Thanks for the links - I've seen those and read a ton of others - anything to do with Fastwins.

mla2 - I was able to get the screws to pop loose. Don't know if it was the PB working or a couple more raps with the hammer but all 3 came out. Plate and housing look good - impeller -Not.

I was thinking of trying the nuts in the tank trick but this one is really a mess. I'll see if I can get a pic of the solid sludge. I forgot about the kerosene, I was thinking gas, Thanks. Might see what a radiator shop would gouge me to clean it up.

HighTrim - Yours looks great and electric start, I'm jealous.

I've been searching threads on pressure tanks and more on the Fastwins. You guys here are fantastic. A wealth if good information. Thanks. Over in the Starcraft forum they often say "saving old Starcraft one boat at a time" All of you are doing that with old Johnny-Rudes, great job and keep it up.

Now that I have my weak attempt to stroke your egos, I have a couple questions on Pressure tanks.Started cleaning mine out trying to see if I can save it.

Pic looking in tank:eek:

Pic of the junk that came out of it

That's over an inch thick in a 10x10 box.

Tank really doesn't look too bad. Has some rust on the inner top, but the bottom is shiny. Used gas and a bunch of nuts. Did some scraping. Then I rattled more nuts around. I need to put this tank on the back of my kids go Kart and run a few laps with the nuts in it.

I Have a Cruis-A-Day tank Model 277237 pressure tank.

First question - Is the Fuel Tank foot valve assembly (part 375848, piece shown in bottom of pic below) a serviceable part? Can I take it apart some how to clean the valve so it doesn't stick? I have put some carb cleaner and PB Blaster in it and the valve moves now but I would like to clean the varnish out more. If it's not servicable is there a good product that removes varnish? Or can you buy this piece somewhere? if I can't get it cleaned up and working.

Second question - I was looking on Vintage Outboards for rebuild kits. They state to use kit JE PT 54 for tanks with the aluminum pump knob. I'm pretty sure thats what I have, but the diagram in the pic below shows that kit is for a Mile Master tank. Is this the right kit for my tank?

Thanks again for any help. I really should be working on my snowmobile.

The valve assembly will clean up fine by soaking, can you rattle it?

Regardless of the "name" of the tank, there are only 2 different rebuild kits to choose from. The shiny aluminum knob, or the newer black plastic knob.
The "Mile Master" tanks were for Johnsons, the "Cruise a Day" Evinrude. They are the same thing, just different decal, no worries.

High Trim - It does rattle a little but I need to loosen it up some more. The screen was completly sealed with varnish, so the inside is most likely filled also.

Thanks for the info on the tanks, Vintage outboard shows 3 different rebuild kits???

I hope you were not putting gas and nuts in the tank and shaking....? Kaboom!

Great project! You'll have it running soon!

I would put new fuel lines on the list too!

Mas, Yes I did and I was smoking too. So that's why your supposed to use kerosene, huh.

Yes fuel lines are on the list, besides the look of dual line is there any reason why you dont use two seperate lines and zip tie together. I was thinking of putting a filter in the line near the tank, seperate lines might work easier?

Yes, 1/8" inch fuel line would work just fine. Zip tie the two together and you're set. The dual line stuff is available, but it isn't cheap.

For cleaning your tank inside I use a pressure washer that has a swivel head stick the wand right down in the tank and blast away, swivel the head and blast some more, I also put a handful or three of aquarium gravel in wile using the pressure washer, and I use this de-greasing soap called Superclean, when I finished and rinse the tank I was amazed at what I saw, the tank was shinny and clean. plenty clean to use. I rescued the same engine last month its # 4 in line. keep posting those pictures I will truly be needing them good luck, take lots & lots of before photos, the really add to the final product :~)

I thought they recomended 1/4 or 5/16" ID line at the motor, wouldn't 1/8" ID cause a restriction?

You could zip tie two lines together to get by as you said (no difference), it's just a matter of aesthetics & nostalgia.

I don't envy you your winters, but I do envy the supply of old OMC outboards that have never seen salt water! There are some great motors in your neck of the woods.

BTW, are you aware that your motor can be converted to include a stock OMC fuel pump, very easily? There are multiple threads here on how to do it.
