The powerhead on this model has to be removed to get the lower unit off..There are literally a hundred posts that will help you with this. Search for 1957 7.5 impeller change..

Try searching for evinrude fleetwin, you'll find a few.

As noted, you need to pull the powerhead to access the shift rod disconnect - should be two nuts at the top of the shift rod with a lock washer between them. Also, note the order in which the spring, seal and washers come off the driveshaft - they MUST go back the same way. If the o-ring in the carbon seal is cracked, replace that, and if the gasket on top of the washer is distorted, replace that, too. Grease the driveshaft splines before re-installing the powerhead.

Well, that's pretty good, but you do NOT have to remove the roll pin. Just pull the shaft out of the lower unit, it isn't going to fly apart or enything, and it WILL just slide right back in.

There is a guide hole that the shift rod goes through. Hunker down and look up in there and you will see it.

The seal assembly on the shaft is of the utmost importance. Make sure it is 100% good, and replace the 303347 o-ring and 303355 gasket. If the seal fails, it will destroy the powerhead over time.

Reading the word on the oil level plug, it says "Hypoid". Hypoid oil is 90 weight gear oil, not hydraulic oil.

Yes, 5.5 and 7.5 are the same.

Re: 1957 evinrude fleetwin 7.5 water pump

Ok I got to power head removed and all that good stuff but when i got the impeller housing off i noticed that the impeller I got from napa was way bigger than the one that was inside the assembly. the one in the assembly was a little bigger than a half dollar.. the one i got from napa was a lot bigger its part number is 18-3001 i am wondering if i was right that it is a 1957 7.5 hp evinrude its model number is 7522-02548.. any help in this area would be great. i have this thing all torn apart and would like to get it back together asap
Edit: the impeller that is inside my motor looks more like this one but i cannot tell if it is the right size. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=SME183091_0134662677

I'll bet someone at some point updated the waterpump housing and impeller on yours to the one they started offering in the 1980s. In that case, you'll need an impeller for a c. 1982 7.5 hp. They offered a housing that retrofitted the then new impeller to the old motors. I prefer the older impeller (18-3001 style) myself - seems to be more robust. You can also get an earlier style impeller housing to go with the impeller you have. I may have a seviceable used one if you need it...

Your link doesn't take me to anything other than a search page.

c. 1982 means circa 1982. The 7.5hp models of the 1980s used a smaller waterpump impeller, but I think the diameter of the shaft was the same, hence the ability to use that impeller with a different housing on the older motors.

That is way more than you need to spend. If your original water pump housing looks good, then I would just buy an impeller. Those are a lot less than 69 bucks. Impellers are easily obtainable here at iBoats or your local yocal marine dealor. If not, go to Sea-Way.com and order one.

I wouldn't buy sierra parts. vintageoutboard.com has excellent oem quality parts for that motor too.

All you need is the impeller from that kit, although the picture they show will NOT work with your motor.

As I noted in my first post, I probably have a serviceable original style pump housing for your 7.5 if you do go that route...

Re: 1957 evinrude fleetwin 7.5 water pump

I would much rather just use the housing that is in it but the problem is that i am haveing trouble finding the right impeller for it the 18-3001 impeller is not the right one it uses the smaller one you were talking about earlier but we have no clue what the part number or anything is for it

Call Doug at vintage outboard. They have parts that match OEM perfectly.

I believe the Sierra number for the impeller you're looking for is 18-3050 (OEM #386084).
