Hi

My throttle gear to move the tiller handle is tight an Im asking how tight should it be . I have another post with the same prioblem in some detail with some of the things wrong . The pesce im talking about is the long rod like thing that moves the advance for the shift and coil that rod conects to the tiller handle . they are bought tight an am wondering how hard is it to fix this problem . I can get some new parts for them , but before I replace some parts . How do I go about this . and how tight should it be . also one of the tiller handle gears are broke I found the gears new on the internet . but will i need to replace them , only one tooth on the gear is broken off . the two parts cost 125.00 with shipping . I dont mine paying for them at all . So can someone walk me thru fixing the handle and where to place the gears in there proper place . Please help me out .

thank You

your best bet is to purchase a GOOD repair manual for your motor, it will pay for itself 10 times over.

the tiller handle comes apart from the handle back..remove the screw that holds the grip on then work your way back...when you get to the the gear that the vertical shaft goes in, there's a plastic "pin" with 2 ears which slide into slots on the upper housing of the gear..sometimes an ear can tear off and the pin gets jammed into that housing...just take off what's necessary to pull that vertical shaft up and you can replace the pin if that's the problem...personally I'd check the salvage yards listed under The Top Secret Files for gears if you need them as you might beat that $125...try outboardbooks.com or ebay for a manual...marineengine.com has diagrams for your engine

Well guys thank you for your help . I fixed the handle without spending money on the handle gears . I was able to save the old one's after greasing up the old gear shafts and gears and placing them in there proper place its ok . I just have to pull the magneto plate its where its the most tightest . I think if it gets some grease under the cam and where the magneto plate is , I maybe ok . I buying new point and condeser for it , plus new champion j6c plugs and if needed a carburator rebuilding kit . all the parts at napa cost 58.00 dollars . Maybe after its all tuned up it will start with one pull .

Re: 1957 evinrude fleetwin throttle gear is tight .

Problem solved . It had a metal part placed in backwards I turned that part around that holds the throttle handle and all is well now . Someone that owned the motor before me had taken the tiller handle apart and not reassembled it the right way . Me not knowing this thought it wasright at first . But after I had problems with the gears slipping and the throttle handle being to tight . It was trial and error on fixing it . So if the next person has a problem with there old evinride fleetwin or fisherman motor that has a tight tiller handle . Look at the metal part that hold sthe spring it to see it its placed it there right . That being placed in there wrong will cause you problems and can be fix very easy too . watch and take some pictures if you can . If you place that metal part in backwards it will be tight on the handle and will cause the tiller throttle to slip on you .
