I found a 1957 Evinrude Lark in the basement of our camp. Motor needs a little TLC but otherwise looks like it is in good shape. I was thinking of putting some time and money into it to restore it some but my question is it worth it. I really do not have any use for it as my new boat is an inboard. I trired to research the value of these motors thinking it is an antique but am having no luck. Does anyone out there know anything about this motor?

Thanks,

Jason

If you are not going to use it, then it's not worth it to get running. It usually costs close to $150-$200 (ignition, carb kit, impeller, etc.) to get it to a reliable running state. The motor would not sell for more than $350, depending on where you're at.

The old big twins are good outboards, and, if it has good compression and the lower unit is OK, they're easy to get running. Value? A running one in decent cosmetic shape around my area is worth about $300 if you can find a buyer.

Likely yours will need new coils. A complete replacement of the ignition system will run you about $100. It will also need a carb rebuild, most likely. Not expensive ($25-30), but it takes some time.

If you need a 35 hp outboard, it's definitely worthwhile. If you don't, then don't expect a big financial return.

I say go ahead and get it running - its at least a good learning experience to find out how to fix the motor.

Welcome to the iboats.com forum. The experts here, which I am not, can help you solve any problem. They are a great resource for anyone thinking about a project like yours. I have scanned and saved a non-factory service manual that covers your model motor. Send me a Private Message with your email address and I will send you a copy if you want it. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the feedback. I guess will try and get it running. I have been working on boats for about 10 years but mostly inboards so i'm not completly in the dark.

First question is "how do i remove the flywheel? Do i need a puller or can i do it without?"
