What years and model lower units will interchange with a 57 10hp Evinrude?

Quick answer: 1955-57 Evinrude & Johnson 10hp motors. 18hp units will bolt up, but the gear ratios are different. This said without actually digging into the parts books.

Please dig. It has a five bolt lower unit. Looks like my 1966 18hp. The motor has no lower unit on it. MIA by previous owner

As said, the 5-bolt units will bolt up but gear ratios vary. I'm not sure I have that info handy in any one place. Anybody??

10hp had 15:26 gears 0.5769
18hp had 12:21 gears 0.5714

Not much difference

The gear ratio was more a difference in design than change in gear ratios. OMC played around with various configurations trying to get the best combo of quiet gears, long lasting gears, and inexpensive-to-make gears.

Gear ratio isn't as important as you might think, as long as it's fairly close and you are using a matched set of all three gears. And, of course, they are for the same shaft sizes.

I've been running a '56 15HP that has a five-bolt lower unit for 6 years with gears removed from a '58 Gale-built 12HP with a 4-bolt lower unit. Works beautifully.

Those gears ratios I quoted were very close. Other times there are significant differences but the cases would bolt up
