Re: 1957 Fastwin 18hp starting mystery

Well, talking open water:eek:, now that is the time to have a reliable engine.

The Atlantic is near me, but I keep to the lakes and still have to make an emergency run to the shore only a mile or two away, when a big windstorm comes up. But I'm running only 9.9 HP and a heavy 16' aluminum boat, can't imagine running a fiberglass with a 9.9.

Nice picture... looks like a powerhouse.

I dont venture to far and usually head against the wind so it can help me get back if needed.
LOL
I grew up fishing New York state and I do miss lakes and navigable rivers.
We dont have any rivers in SoCal and the number of lakes I can run a 2 stroke on is diminishing

I don't think it's a coil problem since it runs great when warm. It's been my experience that coils run fine cold but start failing when warm.

I'm going to test the spark tomorrow. I'll let you know the results. It would be nice to install new coils. Any source for the needed parts?

Support the free forum you are using. iboats sells coils, points, condensers, carburetor kits, and other goodies for your motor.

Absolutely. It's being garage stored. For being 53 years old - it's in GREAT shape. I'm VERY proud of it.

Thanks, a great looking engine, now you have the challenge of making run as good as it looks:) Good luck.

Looks like it is putting out good power in the first picture.

Yep, awsome motor. Exactly the kind that always has cracked coils unless they have already been replaced. If it had been used more, somebody would have fixed it by now.

Re: 1957 Fastwin 18hp starting mystery

puts out great power and runs smooth. . . just takes a Red Bull to start every other day.

Since i tightened up the high-speed washer it doesn't leak gas anymore when pressurized. I'm still going to re-build the carb/ replace float - and since I can't go out this weekend probably install the new coils and ignition tune up kit too. It can't hurt. . . Just in case the needles and seats are bad I ordered those too!

I will loosen the gas cap when towing as well. Hopefully a combination of all the above will help - it's not a very complex engine and can only be a small number of variables causing this strange issue.

What an absolutely gorgeous example of a '57 fastwin. The prop........wow!

Anyway, I'll bet a dollar F-R is right as usual and it has cracked coils. That's the one thing that no matter what, if they are original there's no chance they're good.
Enjoyed the pics,

Pulled the carb off - pretty easily. . . cork float still installed covered in varnish, cracked, and pitted. I have the new replacement which has an "oval" shape (more like a "D") and groove. I don't suppose the shape of the new gasket effects it, right?

The rest of the carb is incredibly clean. All the gaskets are still pliable and the needle show minimal wear. 'must not be the first time it's been cleaned or serviced.

More updates to follow - the re-build kit comes in tomorrow.

Re: 1957 Fastwin 18hp starting mystery

Just wanted to give everyone an update:

a carb-rebuild did nothing to solve my starting problems, although it runs smooth as butter now. What I have noticed is that if I disconnect the fuel lines from the motor while not in use it starts fine. This only happened 1 time so I hope to see the trend stick. Venting the gas cap while towing had no effect, it starts perfect in driveway, then 4 miles down the road it gets flooded and won't start. I counted 47 pulls before it fired on Saturday. On Sunday, I disconnected the fuel lines before towing and it started on the 2nd pull.

I might also mention that while in transportation the motor is tilted up as because I'm using a "motor saver" or whatever they're called that attaches to the trailer and prop to keep the motor from scraping the ground.

Could the tank be the ultimate issue? Can it get over-pressurized and flood the engine just from bouncing around while towing?
