Is the gas cap closed? Needs to be to allow the motor to build up pressure in the tank.

Paint & decals here: nymarine.ca
Carb kit, impeller & ignition components right here on iboats, or as close as your local Johnrude dealer.

Once she's running, try pumping the primer button on the tank and see if she keeps runnning. As mentioned, you may not be developing pressure in the tank, which is necessary. That motor has no fuel pump and relies on pressure buildup in the tank to push gas to the carb. After it runs for awhile, unscrew the gas cap, you should hear a whooshing sound as air escapes the tank.

it kind of stays running a little bit when i pump the primer but it still stalls after a short time i noticed the gas line is missing a clamp and the rest are all zip ties so that doesnt help matters any...then id imagine the carb is probably dirty too

Those carbs had wooden floats that get old and break down, especially with the newer fuel being offered. My 61' had that problem. Try cleaning it but look at the float and the general shape of the other parts inside. Your carb is slightly different than mine was but they are pretty easy to rebuild if you need to.

when you push the primer button on the tank a few (or more) times, does it get harder to push? it should ! you may also want to look into a tank rebuild kit.

Many parts are available right here at Iboats. NAPA also has aftermarket (Sierra) parts. And of course, any Johnnyrude dealer will have or can get parts for the old motors. I find a lot of stuff on eBay, and when I'm having a hard time locating a specific part, I place a want ad at AOMCI.org.

update: cleaned the carb everything inside was spotless and looked good put it together it runs better but still quits after a bit the gas lines are missing clamps so im putting all new line and hose clamps on it and hopefully that should cure the problem the connector that tank lines go into that connectes to engine is also loose so im just going to try my dads gas tank for his 15 horse it should work
