Re: 1957 Johnson 10 hp bucking and banging

I feel like an idiot but I'm having a hard time figuring out what and where a clutch dog is. I'll admit I thought people on this forum were telling me I need a clutch and used the word dog a lot. Is it any of the parts in this diagram on page 12?

Also when i get to it will it be visually damaged so I'm sure it's the issue? Thanks again for all the help. I'm so excited to get this motor running well.

375711 | eBay

I found a bunch here under my part #375711 but there seems to be 2 different kinds under that part number. All of the used ones that look like mine seem to be worn in the same place as mine. Will both of them work if it's the same part number?

I don't know if they are interchangeable.
When I replaced the gears on my 110 Evinrude, I ended up placing an ad over at aomci.org . I was able to get a brand new omc set. A retired mechanic had them sitting on a shelf.
Maybe you should give it a shot.
I wouldn't mess with a used one. You may be buying the same problem you have now. Just out of curiosity, what do the lobes inside the face of your gears look like? Are the mating surfaces where the dog meshes worn too?

Yeah that little bit of wear can cause a slip under load. Now those lobes mesh into your forward and reverse gears. I was just wondering is the matching lobes on the gears show signs of wear too.

Nope - lobes in the gears look great.

+1. That's all it takes for them to slip. It's kind of amazing when you think that all of the power for the motor comes down to those two little lobes. Newer motors tend to have clutches with 3 or more dogs to help prevent this sort of thing. Be sure to check the inner mating surfaces of the gears to see if they show any signs of wear. Hopefully, they'll be ok, but if not, you may have to replace them as well. I've had very good luck placing a WTB ad on aomci.org, but you can also check ebay, marineengine.come and other sites.

Re: 1957 Johnson 10 hp bucking and banging

Hey Guy's I am a newbee to the Site. I have been reviving an ugly (which I love) 1956 Evinrude fastwin 15 and took it for the first cruze yesterday. After, Carb Kit, Coils, Condencers, Plug wires, Water impeller, Lower unit seal kit and pressureized tank cleaning and rebuild. pulled away from the dock and all was right in the world but when i started to open it up a bit i noticed a knock that would make my Alumicraft 14' F7 jump. I shut it down and inspected the prop, but nothing. I thought I was in deep water but you never know. Started back up and opened it up a bit and the same thing happened at least three or four more times until i lost all forward motion, yep... SHEAR PIN.
so we ended up using the trusty MinnKota to get back to the docks. Sounds like i will be looking for a Clutch dog also. Thanks for the shared knowladge!

I got the new clutch dog in the mail and of course it's not quite like mine. After putting it next to the gear though I think they are interchangeable. In fact this one seems to grab quite well without the possibility of ever slipping. I'm going to put it all back together tonight and see if I'm right tomorrow.

What is the model number of that engine? If it's mentioned anywhere on this thread, I keep overlooking it.

Re: 1957 Johnson 10 hp bucking and banging

The QD-18 is indeed a 1957 10hp Johnson.

If the forward gear lobes are worn, have a machine shop square up those lobes, otherwise the worn lobes of the forward gear will destroy the new clutch dog.

Clutch dog - 375711 - $118.30 as of 2010 (Top picture in your dog pics)

Forward gear - 376715 - 377147 - Unavailable since 1982, at that time was $107.25

-----------------------

HOWEVER!..... The clutch dog that you removed (lower picture) is not from a 1957 10hp Johnson lower unit but rather from a 1957 7.5hp Johnson as follows:

7.5hp clutch dog part #376078 --> #333518 - $94.97 as of 2010 and listed as available on 2010

7.5hp forward gear part #376345 --> #377152 - LP $89.00 - Unavailable date not listed.

I'm no expert but I assumed I was the first person ever to enter this gear area. The screws we still perfect with paint covering them. Perhaps someone switched the Lower Units? Were they the same?

Re: 1957 Johnson 10 hp bucking and banging

The complete lower units are interchangeable between horse powers BUT the inner components differed. It appears that your 10hp model has a 7.5hp lower unit installed. I'm waiting for the other members to join in here one way or the other.

Whenever I replaced a destroyed lower unit to an engine, it was cleaned and repainted professionally so that the engine in its entirety looked like it had never been dismantled. That may be the case with your engine but I can't say for sure without actually being there.

I will look thru my other old manuals to see if any older 10hp model ever incorporated that 7.5hp clutch dog and get back to you.

Re: 1957 Johnson 10 hp bucking and banging

I'm happy with the dog I ended up with and am confident it will work. I did end up with the wrong LU driveshaft seal and now I'm regretting digging the old one out. I guess I have to wait a few more days before I can get back on the water. DO any non-internet auto parts stores carry such seals?
