Re: 1957 Johnson 35 HP Lower Unit

sorry about draggin up an old thread but I am changing seals in my 1960 40hp johnson and I am wondering why it has to be a 5/16" rod ground down to .250 could I just get a .250 rod and use that

You want the rod to have a shoulder to contact the bottom of the bushing. The inside diameter of the bushing is 1/4". If you used a 1/4" rod you wouldn't have the shoulder. Without the shoulder your have nothing to contact the bushing to drive it out.

You must be careful that the shoulder doesn't also contact the lower unit housing casting while you are pounding on the bushing. The rod in the picture had its shoulder ground to a taper because it was contacting the housing on one particular motor. I grounded it back to a shoulder for use on another motor.

1/4" fits through the hole in the rod, the larger portion does not, so the larger shoulder drives the bushing out.
