Hi.

I have always admired vintage outboard motors so with the pandemic, I bought a 1957 Johnson 7.5. There was water in the gear oil so I replaced all of the seals and water pump and then replaced all of the seals on the carburetor. When I pumped up the pressure tank, the motor started however gas started coming out of the carburetor where the silencer attaches. Did I do something wrong when I rebuilt the carburetor? I'm not a mechanic but followed the diagrams and YouTube videos.
Thank you,

Bruce

Think float assembly, and venting. Should soak carb top and bottom after disassembly, then clean every opening with a soft wire and carb spray.

Thank you Oldboat1,

I cleaned everything very well so I will take a look at the float. If I "flooded" the engine, is this were excess gas would flow?

If the bowl is overflowing.... Look at the parts diagram carefully -- possible to install the float upside down.

always do a blow test on the carb before installing

air goes in right side up

air does not go in upside down

carbs are no different than toilet bowl tanks… if they overfill the shut-off valve (inlet) is not doing it's job

Thank you for the advice. It turned out that I made the rookie mistake and installed the float upside down.

I have one more question. In one video I watched for a carb rebuild, the host installed a spring on the needle valve and hooked it on the float. On another video, the host just installed the needle and did not use the spring apparatus. Which is correct?

If there is a groove for the clip , it is to be used.-----If yours is the original all metal needle you do not need it.

Hey there, where is anyone getting parts for the 1957 7.5 ad-11? I’d like a water pump rebuild kit and possibly some other odds and ends

A lot of the parts are in stock at good boat shops.------If you ask for parts for a 57 model they might say " NOT AVAILABLE "------If you present them with part numbers they might say '" it is on the shelf or it will be here in 2 days "

might try NAPA. Online marine catalogue, I think. (Sierra parts.)
