Re: 1957 Johnson Javelin 35HP Compression

That's a super nice boat and outstanding craftsmanship!! I'm sooooo jealous. I've been wanting one of those for several years, and still hope to build it one day. I wish you weren't so far away, because I'd love to talk you into giving me a ride into it to see how it handles. I hope you have good news on your motor. If not, do yourself a favor and place a free ad on aomci.org if you haven't already done so. You will be treated to a really good price on a good powerhead or a good used motor most likely. I've always had the best luck with how fellow members treated me. I actually felt guilty for accepting some of their offers!
Good luck,
JBJ

You can also work on your setup.
The motor has already been raised about an 1.5 inches to accommodate a teleflex steering setup.

The Javelin will have a lot more torque...is the transom rated at all?
The designer, Glen-L Marine, suggests 10HP, but my boat deviates from the design. The boat is a foot longer, the transom 3/8" thicker than design and I added additional transom supports on each side. Design only calls for the single transom knee in the center.

JB, you're not that far away and you'd be more than welcome to go for a ride. Depending on how big a feller you are, you might even have to take it out yourself because until I get a bigger motor, it might not plane with the both of us in it. PM me next time you'll be in the Baton Rouge area.
