Hi all,

I recently purchased an old what I believe to be 1957 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 hp (I don't have the SN on me at the moment). It is not locked up but I do not want to attempt to crank it until I know everything is working. All moving parts I could easily access appear to move freely. I've seen references to manuals, but some of those links no longer work, so any help in finding one of those would be great. Also, if anyone can point me in the right direction as far as where to start with initial replacements or part checks. One other question I have not come across is the following: the engine cowl has a large crack in it and one side of the crack has bent outward a bit. Has anyone had any experience with fixing this issue? I would think someone could possibly weld it back together from the inside, but I'm afraid to try bending it (it will bend back into position) because I do not want to break it any more.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Finding a used cowling may not be as difficult as you'd think. The bottom on the list on the first link JB sent you to has a salvage yard list. My favorite is timsoutboard.com (not on the list).

If your cowling 'looks bendable' to original, perhaps you should bring it to a welding shop. They'll likely know how to bend it w/o stressing the aluminum and snapping it, and will weld it up nice... probably cheaper than buying a used one + shipping.
Good luck!

It sucks that Oregon Outboard Salvage closed up on us here. They were an excellent source of parts
