1957 Lark 35hp - delayed pumping?

Got my pontoon back in the water today with my '57 Lark on it. Over the winter, I replaced the L/U seals and water pump impeller. I noticed today that it takes 30-60 seconds before it starts pumping water after the engine is started. Once it starts pumping, it puts out plenty of water. Before I replaced the impeller, it started pumping almost immediately. Any thoughts?

have you tried it several times, the vanes could have been backwards, but they will usually right themselves.

Yup - tried several times and even went out and ran it at full throttle. I'm pretty sure the vanes were the right direction but anything is possible.

That motor should start pumping almost immediatly. Certainly not 60 seconds. Something isn't right. We can continue to guess, but that doesn't get the job done. Start with a second look at the water pump.

(It IS deep enough in the water, right?

Duh - am I stupid or what? When I did all the lower unit work this winter, I also converted the motor from long shaft to short shaft. Well, it wasn't deep enough in the water! Dropped the transom down a few inches so the entire L/U is submerged and it works fine. Thanks F_R - sometimes it takes someone else to point out the simplest and most obvious solution to the problem!
