Re: 1957 lark help!!

ok i dont have an oil pump so can i fill it from the vent hole? also there is a plate with two screws holding it in on the left side of the motor should that be filled with anything or should there be a gasket there? i took it off and saw some grey residue some type of grease or something it and there was no gasket is that normal? also i noticed a leak in the pressure relief valve above the spark plug so i took the head off to clean the valves my question is what seals the valve? is it just the valve itself or the o ring on the valve shaft? thanks again
chris
also is it just me or is this engine thirsty?

its most wasteful of fuel at idle so u can run at about 1/2 -3/4 throttle and get good gas millage

Any outboard dealer or marina will have a pump for about $10 - it's just a little plastic plunger thingy that mounts on a quart bottle of gear oil. Lower unit must be filled from the bottom or you will have air pockets inside and will probably not get it completely filled. That plate on the side is the access to the shift rod connector. Nothing goes in there. If you remove the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller, you have to disconnect the shift rod by removing one of the bolts under that plate. Not sure about that pressure valve. Yes, that motor sucks the gas!

yea, buy the pump. Easier and cheaper in the long run than the tubes.

ok i changed the gear oil it was a milky color guessing thats not good... i need a head gasket any suggestions on where to buy one? i was going to make one but i noticed the metal rings around the piston so no bueno with that. i also cleaned the relief valve but it still wont seal, if im using electric start will it hurt to weld it shut? thanks again
