have been tinkering with this one for awhile....converted to "electronic" ignition, finished up the rear mount fuel pump conversion and moved on to replacing the impeller. all went good....lu dropped easily with no persuation....but the ds stayed in the powerhead! went on to remove the impeller housing and twisted off one of the three screws. hopefully that will come out.
but the housing is quite a mess....deeply pitted, has anyone come up with a fix for that pitting? the housing costs more than i paid for the motor!!!!
( the motor did pump water quite well, but the old impeller looks like a 6 legged spider that was stepped on 10 times! lol)

The pits in the housing might cause the new impeller to wear out pretty quick.
Have you checked any salvage yards for used ones?

I know I have some brand new 9.5/10hp housings from the 4 bolt gearcases, let me see if I have any good used ones for ya for the 5 bolt case.

I just had such a housing problem on a 59 jonny 35. What I did was buy one of those cheesy rubber pad sanding disk that go in a hand drill I cut the rubber disk to fit the inside of the housing cup then glued 200 grit emery cloth cut to size and glued it to the disk. put it in a cordless drill and slowly spun it in the cup. it cleaned up nice, I then put a "thin" coat of JB weld let it dry overnight and repeated the sanding. I then painted the whole housing inside and out with rattle can cold-galv. It darn near looked new. and she pumps water nicely. What lead me to do this was this being a 59 double water tube housing, talk about cost ""ouch...

Johnson Gear Case Group Parts for 1957 18hp FD-11 Outboard Motor

is part #24 in this link a "snap ring" ? and how far down would the impeller pin drop in relation to the impeller plate if that ring was broken? ( assuming that the 57 10hp and 18 hp have identical lu's)
i was removing a broken impeller housing screw and found what sure looks like a small piece of a snap ring laying in the space below the plate? its only about 1/4 long, and a rough guess from the curve, looks like it would be about an inch in diameter?
